TNR groups in Woodbury, Long Island, NY

Some relatives of mine have managed to collect over 40 feral cats in their house in NY. I do TNR work in Seattle, WA, and plan to fly out there at the end of March to trap them all and get them fixed, vaccinated, tested, and treated for mites/fleas.

The problem is that I’m having very little luck finding TNR programs in the area (I know all the tricks for finding them, too). It seems that almost everything is in New York City and doesn’t have funding for Long Island.

I got in contact with a woman who does TNR herself (kind of out of her own home) and she told me there really weren’t any TNR groups but gave me the number of a vet who would give me a good deal. I’m just wondering if anyone is in the area and knows of anything else?

With 40 cats, I really need the surgery to be free. I’m 17 and have been saving up to pay for the vaccines, tests, etc. but there is only so much I can do. I can even bring my own traps and do all the work, I just need a vet willing to spay/neuter and ear tip them. I guess we’re spoiled in Seattle, there are free TNR clinics every way you turn!

Thanks for any help.

Dragon girl,

I haven’t been on here for a while so just saw this. Maybe too late but did you contact the North Shore Animal League? They’re on Long Island and the biggest shelter/rescue around. Also check out Ally Cat Allies. They have contacts with local groups. T.A.R.A. is a low cost, mobile spay/neuter clinic who may be willing to help.

Most TNR programs I know of around here are done by grass root orgs. Mostly individuals or small groups taking care of a a few feral colonies in a small area. And since they work usually at night they often aren’t even noticed.

Couple more things I would try. Have your relatives check out their local yellow pages. Call every local vet and shelter to see if you can get a few to help with a couple of cats each. Or perhaps they know of people who do this without advertising. Wouldn’t hurt to check with Petsmart or other local pet stores either.

One last thought. Would your relatives be willing to start a donation campaign? Perhaps their neighbors, friends, associates, local businesses etc... could be convinced to help with the problem by donating a couple of bucks. (That might work especially if any of your relatives are really cute, small children who can tear up at will. ;))

Let us know how it goes!

Hey, sorry I missed both these posts!!

It turns out the family member we were in contact with didn’t have all the facts and most of the cats were already, in fact, spayed/neutered.

For the few that she hadn’t been able to catch, I got in contact with that very rescue and she is borrowing traps for them to get them taken care of.

Thank you for all your info!

I am now focusing on placing my ten new FIV+ rescues. You can read my other thread about them, just posted updated pics.
