’Hit A Cat, I’ll Hit Your Kid’ Upsets Town

I found this article earlier today and thought I’d share it with you guys.

Quote:

A Lodi woman posted a sign with the words, "Hit a cat, I’ll hit your kid." Some neighbors said they are concerned their children’s lives are being threatened.

"Basically what this is saying is: Hit a cat and I’ll hit your kid," said Tina Teixeira.

Teixeira got a lot of attention after she put the sign up in front of her West Elm Street home in Lodi, reported KCRA-TV in Sacramento, Calif.

"You don’t want me to hit your kid, so don’t hit mine. You hurt mine, that is just like if I went over and ran over your kid. Basically, that is what I was intending," said Teixeira.

Teixeira said she decided to take action after a driver ran over and killed her cat on the bike lane on Friday.

Some parents were outraged over her cardboard note.

"Basically she is threatening to hit people’s kids," said neighbor Joann Larsen.

"One parent said that I was psychotic," said Teixeira.

Teixeira said she wanted to shock drivers, not harm their kids.

Teixeira said she knows her sign would upset people but she put it up because she is tired of people driving 65 mph on a 35 mph zone.

She said she noticed some cars slowing down and reading her sign, so she wrote a new sign.

"After burying the cat and calming down a little bit ... (I realized) that it was a little shock value. It got attention for people, so I thought that I would put it in more understanding terms," said Teixeira.

The revised sign reads: "I watch for your kids, so please watch out for mine."

"That is the whole point here is to stop hurting animals," said Teixeira.

Teixeira said she isn’t shy about yelling at drivers and even her neighbors. She said she even mentioned she spit on someone to protect her cats.

Only one neighbor wanted to talk about her sign. Others said they wanted to avoid any problems.

"I do like that she changed it," Larsen said.

The animal lover said she can only hope she can keep her cats from losing another life.

Teixeira said some of her feral cats don’t like to stay indoors.

She said she hopes her sign will get city leaders to install speed bumps in her neighborhood, which is right near a school.

I think she went too far. What do you guys think?

If she truly loves her cats, shouldn’t she keep them in the house? Even if cars slow down on the road, isn’t it still possible for her cats to get hit?

People "take in" feral cats all the time. Most do not take to living indoors, so I can see where her problem lies. I’d do the same thing...although I don’t think I’d spit on people. My animals are my kids, so I think the sign fits. It makes people think. It’s not like she beat anybody. She could have done WAY worse.

’Hit A Cat, I’ll Hit Your Kid’ Upsets Town

i know that sometimes it’s really not that easy to take a cat indoors. i had a cat growing up that just showed up at our house one day. he was a black cat and we named him jake. we fed him, took him to the vet, but my parents would NOT allow a cat indoors. only the dogs were allowed inside. to me, taking care of the cat outside was better than him being taken to the pound to be euthanized. so i can see her keeping cats outside. what i can’t see is spitting on somebody. i don’t really actually see myself putting a sign up like that also. i mean, don’t get me wrong, i’m a vet tech and my animals are like my kids, but i’m not stupid. my actual child’s life is WAAAYY more important than my dog’s life. and to see a sign that says someone is going to hit my child would put me in an uproar. an animal’s life is not as important as a human being’s life.

i can make my point very well with this also. if you’re driving down the road and you see a dead animal that has been hit by a car, whether it be a dog, cat, opossum, or anything, you’re not going to stop to pick up that dead animal. if you’re driving and you see a dead child on the side of the road, you’re going to stop. my point exactly. if animals were as important as people, then they would be treated equally.

don’t get me wrong, i have no patience for people that hit animals with cars and don’t stop, for people that abuse animals, or people that have animals and don’t take care of them. my point is just because someone runs over a feral cat that most likely doesn’t have vaccinations, isn’t vaccinated for rabies or anything, hasn’t been checked for worms, isn’t on any kind of heartworm or flea prevention, doesn’t mean you should run over their kid. i don’t care if the animal is feral or not, if i decide to take responsibility for an cat, it will have vaccinations, be checked for worms regularly, have heartworm and flea prevention (especially if it’s outside). yes i don’t know if this woman actually did these things or not, but from what i’ve experienced, she probably hasn’t. i think there are too many stray cats in the world that people take care of. i know it’s easy to say i’m going to feed this feral cat so it doesn’t starve. but then it doesn’t have shots and isn’t spayed or neutered. so then you start feeding this cat, it attracts more cats up. then all of a sudden you have twenty cats eating off your porch. then they start multiplying because they’re not fixed. then all of a sudden one gets feline leukemia or some other disease, that disease wipes through the entire population. and next you have to watch all these cats suffer to death because you don’t have the money to take all of them to the vet.

sorry for ranting, but the stray cat thing always gets me in an uproar.

I personally think cats belong indoors. They are not native animals. Yes they can adapt to outdoors but it’s the native species of birds and rodents that suffer.

I can understand the sign I suppose. I can understand her anger and one of her cats being run over like that. Some people, as sad as it is, don’t stop for animals that can’t do significant damage to their cars. I’ve heard of someone hitting a golden retriever and keep driving(I used to work at a vets office part time). It could have just as well been a genuine accident. we don’t know

here’s my solution: Drivers need to slow down. And people need to keep their cats indoors.

As for the feral cats....that’s where the drivers need to slow down :)

I think it’s great! It’s just a sign stating her opinion & I especially like the revised version that will upset people much less. Clearly she’s making an effort to get her point across without causing distress or she wouldn’t have bothered making the edit.

It makes me sick that people run animals over & just keep on driving. Some elderly woman once ran over my dog with my mom standing there in the front yard. My dog was wandering down by the curb & of course my mom was at fault for not paying attention & having the dog on a leash. The driver shouldn’t have been off in la-la-land, but my mom was still responsible. What makes me furious to this day is that after hitting my dog & realizing she’d done so (my mom was screaming & pounding on the woman’s hood, hysterical, b/c the woman had actually parked on top of my dog), she sped away down the street. This was someone in my NEIGHBORHOOD. Regardless of who is at fault, how can someone not care about whether an animal lives or dies?

A few Thanksgivings ago I drove past a dead cat in the road. I stopped to be sure the cat was dead & move it to the side of the road. I noticed it had a collar so I removed it, went to my family’s house, & called the number on the tag. It turns out it was the cat of a girl I was in school with. She was devastated. Someone had killed her cat & just kept on driving when they could have called that number & told her what had happened, maybe even given the cat a chance to live.

To me, killing animals is the same as killing children because they are both innocent victims. I know most people don’t agree but I understand this woman’s perspective.

I think people need to chill out. There are much more serious things to get worked up over. And obviously she can’t keep feral cats inside. If she could, they wouldn’t be feral.

On a side note, I do keep my cats indoors for their own safety & the safety of wildlife.

i think she was just making a point. I always keep my cats indoors, but they were raised that way. a feral cat has a right to live outside. Its torture to them if you force them to stay inside UNLESS they were raised indoors. A animals life is just as inportant to some people as a child is to others. Just be careful and watchful was all the woman was getting at.

m cats can’t stand being inside for too long. i only let them out once we move somewhere far from the main road where i didn’t need to worry about that too much. i mean my cat is just as likly to get killed as i am when i step out my door. so what should i do force my cats to be misserable their whole lives cause i am scared they will get hurt? but still if you live RIGHT next to a road then your a tard if you let your cat out.

I believe that was her risk to take by keeping the cats outside. If they are considered her kids, she should keep them inside. She wouldn’t let her kids run around in front of cars.( I hope not anyways).

It is terrible how people can hit a dog or cat and keep on going. I work at a Vet Clinic and we once had a Husky and a Chocolate Lab brought in by a man who had found them after they had been hit. The Husky’s rear end was struck and broke his tail. The tail ended up having to be amputated. And the lab got the blunt of the blow. He had some internal damage and a severely broken leg. They were able to screw and plate it back together and they are both doing well now. We were able to locate the owners the same day. They didn’t have any tags and were not micro chipped, but they were wearing collars. Their names are Dakota and Sam and they turned out to be a positive story.
