Bad news! people make me angry

so i have an outside cat that lives at my mother’s house. he is in absolute misery inside. he begins tearing up the carpet at the door to get out. he runs out every chance he gets. he has even ripped off the bottom panel of the front door. he was a neighbor’s outside cat that i rescued when he was very ill. so he’s just always been an outside cat. when i moved and got married, we tried having him with us inside, but it just really didn’t work out. he’s a great cat...will let you do anything with him...but HATES being inside. he’s around 12 or 13 years old by now. so... my mother calls me at work today (i’m a vet tech) and tells me that she has to bring tango in to me because he’s not acting right. she said that he won’t get out of his bed, and he is meowing in pain when she tries to move him. so of course i think he has been hit by a car.

so she gets to the clinic, the doctor and i look at him and he even has a scrape on the inside of his leg. everything looks like he’s been hit. the doctor wanted to take xrays, of course, to make sure there was nothing serious going on. well as soon as he was sedated we decided to take a closer look since it was hard before because he was in pain. the doctor found a little scab right above his tail. i shaved the area and picked the scab off...there was a small puncture hole. he had a fever, so of course we all are pretty much concluding that he was attacked by another animal and now has an infection. i cleaned his sores up and off we go to take xrays.

so one of the other techs was developing the xrays, and comes fast to me and says....um....your cat was shot!! i said WHAT!!?? someone shot him with a pellet gun. the pellet went in right above his tail and ended up in his chest. the doctor said it would cause more damage to take the pellet out than to let it stay in. so as of right now he’s up there in the hospital, on medicine for pain, infection, and swelling. i know the risks of having an outside cat. he is a neutered old cat that stays in my mom’s yard or visits the next door neighbors. it was probably some kids that did it i’m sure. it makes me sooo angry. that’s the risks of a cat living outside. i keep him up to date on vaccines, flea, and heartworm prevention, but there’s always the unexpected. he has gone through 4 of his 9 lives now. he’s lucky that he has a mom that will take him to the vet. his old owner was going to let him lay in the bushes and die.

so, fingers crossed, he will be just fine.

That is terrible! Poor Tango! I feel for you, there are some sick, sick, b*****ds out there!

My first cat Katy, was an indoor/outdoor cat. We used to have these people who lived behind us that would always threaten to shoot her if they got a chance. For no reason of course. They were just a bunch of idiots who had drunken parties & liked to shoot animals with their bb guns. Katy was a fat old girl who wouldn’t hurt a fly. She just wanted to lounge around in the sun & explore the ravine. When we found her with a wound similar to what you described we were hysterical, thinking they’d finally gone ahead & shot her! Turns out it was a raccoon bite (or so the vet thought but I still wonder as there was just the one clean entrance wound). Luckily Katy had many more happy years & lived to the age of 21!

I really hope your little Tango gets well soon & I hope karma gets those A-holes who shot him. I hope their gun backfires on them! And I hope Tango is hiding in the bushes watching so he can have a good laugh at their expense!

That happened to me several times. Well, at first we thought it was coyote’s, as they are a huge problem around here. Even during the day time it is not unusual to find them. Turns out our neighbor was ticked off that the county let us have horses and wouldn’t let him keep pigs, so he made us miserable. When my dad went over to argue with him after taking pictures of me riding to show the county (they ended up telling us we had to get rid of my boys cause he wouldn’t leave them alone. GRR) He admitted he was also shooting our cats. Of course, his story was different when we called the cops.
About a year ago our cats named Tank walked in with a hole in her rear end. We immediatly took her to the vet. Everybody had thought she had been attacked by a dog or something.
The crays showed she had been shot, but our neighbor, no doubt. This was a cat who NEVER left the yard. She liked being up by the house and the people. I REALLY wish I had proof so he could be cited.
I hope your cat gets better. We were lucky and my cat never even acted like it was there. To this day she walks with a bullet by her spine.
People who shoot animals like that should go to jail. No questions asked. If they are heartless enough to just randomly kill an animal, who says he isn’t the same with people?

i agree. even if it is a kid just having fun with his pellet gun, what kind of adult is that kid going to be? if a kid doesn’t have enough concsience to not shoot an innocent animal, then they might grow up and not have any second thoughts about shooting a person. what kind of people are in this world nowadays?

I’m with you guys! It also really makes me furious that parents buy their children guns as toys & let them go out there unsupervised & torment animals. Of course, those parents obviously don’t care about innocent animals suffering. Otherwise they would have taught their kids to respect life. Even if they don’t grow up & harm humans, I think people like that are still heartless & evil & the world is better off without them. It honestly makes me sick to my stomach to think about how someone could do this kind of thing for fun.

It is sick!! That is horrible. Justice will be served. I’m ok with hunting, because the people who hunt eat the animal and dont waste it!! Those who do make me angry. But hurting an animal is cruel otherwhise. I also hate it when people stuff animals. ugh. soooo disgusting. I’m glad your cat is doing well. If i may say, god bless

We’ve had a little siamese kitty in the rescue for over two years because she was shot with a pellet gun. The bullet couldn’t be removed and paralyzed her back leg, which had to be amputated to prevent the bed sores she was getting and help her walk better. Now, with three legs and no bladder control, her hopes of finding a good home are slim to none. That and the fact that the vet says she could die at any moment due to lead poisoning from the bullet.

No matter how well your cat is taken care of, it still is never safe to let them outside unsupervised. Sounds like you don’t have much of a choice with Tango, but for everyone else getting new kitties, please keep them inside where they are safe and not spreading diseases, being hit by cars, shot, eating poison, fighting with other cats, running away, getting stolen, etc. etc.

Good luck with Tango!

i agree that cats should be inside. my cat sasha is completely indoors. tango is just one of those special cases. when he was rescued he was a completely outside cat. the plus is he was neutered at an early age and never has roamed around or gotten into fights. sometimes other cats come up and pick fights with him, but he never starts it and he is meek and mild. i feel really bad for him. this is how much he CANNOT stay inside of a house; my parents just went out of town, i kept their big dog for them at my house but i had to board tango at the vet. i felt bad having to pay my employer to keep my own cat when i’m home, but he just can’t stay inside without tearing something up...and i’m in a rental house!

anyway, thanks for all of your concern. he’s still doing great. the hair that i shaved on his butt is almost grown up now so you can’t even tell anything happened to him. he is his old goofy cross eyed self again!

I am very sorry this happened to you and Tango! I also work at a vet clinic and the other day a cat came in that had been shot in the leg. It shattered the bone and we ended up euthanizing the cat.

We shouldn’t have to worry about things like that. It is very unfortunate that we do.
