Any bottle feeders out there? I have questions.

So I’m bottle feeding my 2nd litter of kittens that were dropped off this year. I’ve got 4 beauties that are about 4 weeks old. I’m feeding formula on demand, dry food out to explore, and just started some moist to get them intersted (at the advice of my vet). Now one of the little babies, Socks, is fighting extreme diarhea. I gave him a dose of benebac, but it doesn’t seem to be doing much. I can take him to the vet on Friday, but is there anything I can do to help the little fella before that? I have to wait until I get paid. He’s eating well, playing great, sleeping like kittens do, just watery stool. Thanks for your time. Shari

what color is the diarrhea? if it’s a yellowish muddy color it’s most likely coccidia. that of course is contagious to the others...and i might separate him until i know for sure what he has. it could possibly be intestinal worms also. it could be the introduction to solid food. all benebac is, is just beneficial bacteria for the gut. it’s not actually a medicine that stops diarrhea. it just aids in healthy intestinal function. it’s good to give...as long as you know the correct dose. we use anti-diarrhea medicines...just like what you get at walmart. it’s not good to dose a cat with human meds without a vet... you can kill them. i’m sure this would help...just don’t know the dose. i’m a tech and i’ve used just the regular equate brand of anti diarrhea meds from walmart. depending on how small he is...and i know he’s small...i’d say his dose is probably around .2 or .3 ml. that’s not 2 or 3... it’s .2 or .3. two tenths or three tenths of a ml...or cc. that’s hardly any at all. sorry to keep repeating it but it’s detrimental that you not overdose a cat. dogs aren’t so sensitive but cats can be killed easy with human meds.

best advice is to call your vet and ask how much to give. that way it’s better safe than sorry. good luck. i hope the guy gets better. if it is coccidia...you will have to put him and probably the rest of the litter on albon for about a week.

Thanks so much for responding. It was actually a light brown/gray color. Couldn’t take the worry so I had him checked. The vet thinks its from switching food, and he seems to be doing much better now. Still runny, but not as bad. I’m getting very attached to the little stinkers,, and I know thats good for them, bad for me, because we aren’t keeping them. (Already have 3 cats, 2 dogs, russian tortoise and 4 leopard geckos!) I do have a degree in animal sciences, but when you don’t deal with babies, you just for get so much. Thanks again for your time I really do appreciate it!!!! Shari

you’re welcome. i’m glad you had him checked and everything turned out to be okay. my friend called me today to tell me some bad news about her dad’s new kitties. he began taking care of a pregnant cat that came up to his house. she had kittens. he has already given two kittens away. one that was adopted was taken to the vet and tested positive for feline luckemia!! my friend was going to take one also. i assured her that keeping a cat with fel luk is really hard. it can never go outside, it has no immune system, and will get sick often. i told her that this means all the kittens and mom has it too. i think it was pretty devestating. her dad planned on getting the mom spayed and vaccinated as soon as the kittens were gone and not sucking from her. so now i don’t know what they’re going to do. she’s kind of an outside cat, which all that will do is spread the virus and expose her to things that will kill her. i told her the most humane thing would be to euthanize. that’s what my vet recommends with a cat with fel luk....if you don’t want to live under the tight restrictions involving proper care. it’s really sad.

I’m so sorry to hear about that. I live in Arizona and feline leukemia runs rampant down here in the feral cats. I totally agree with the vet though. Euthanasia is the best answer for her. It prevents it from spreading and saves her from the pain that eventually she would have to go through. Thanks again for your help. Shari
