 Clumping/non-clumping cat litter

My older cat (I’ve got two boys 7 & 12) is presently being treated for a urinary tract infection and my vet has told me that the first thing I need to do is replace my clumping cat litter with non-clumping cat litter - that cats who use clumping litter have a much higher incidence of urinary tract infections because the litter holds so much bacteria etc. etc. - I’ve searched the web for any info to substantiate what my vet has said and can’t find a thing. Does anyone have an opinion on this or better yet, some information? I do trust my vet and I have changed the litters but I just so much prefer the clumping litter myself that I’d like some info on this. Thanks everyone!

 Clumping/non-clumping cat litter

I honestly haven’t heard such a thing, unless he’s talking about lowgrade clumping catlitter - where the piss parts just don’t clump up correctly and fall apart under the scoop. Perhaps he was actually referring to regular clay catlitter - where crap can be scooped out of it, but it has a high chance of letting the piss sit at the bottom of the box, where bacteria can roam.

Personally, I believe clumping cat litter (the good kind) is the best that you can give to your cat. Well, provided you scoop once to twice a day. Or, if you have cash to buy one of those automatic litterboxes, it’ll scoop itself. Just scooping once to twice a day and replacing the box at the end of the week will do quite good at preventing infections.

As a latter note, be sure to avoid anything that wont be soft under the cats foot. All cats I’ve known have completely avoided pellet litters like Feline pine - instead preferring to piss EVERYwhere else but the litterbox. That was murder.

If you’re worried about clumping catlitter still, but still want a soft litter that’s easy to clean. Try out sand. Organic potting soil is another alternative.

^^` and just between you and me. The only times I’ve honestly had a cat with a urinary tract infection was when I was using regular clay litter. Tidycat. Of course, the same cats who got the infections were either obese or stopped cleaning themselves to the point that they just dragged their butt on the carpet. So the cause of your older cat’s infection could easily be a senile bout of stubborness to clean.

I hope this helps you out at least a marginal bit ;)
