 African Black Millipede

What do they eat? I know they like fruit, but anything else? How big do they get? How long do they live? I’d appreciate your help!

i have one and it eats garbage basically. rotten vegetables are favorite. use peat-moss as bedding cause they eat a little of that. mine drink out of a wet sponge.

Males have a set of modified legs on the 7th (I think it’s the 7th...maybe 8th?) gonopod from the head that are used in breeding. These legs appear to be missing but are simply tucked under the body whereas females’ legs are all there.

Not at all, millipedes are among the calmest and most gentle invertebrates I’ve ever seen. A. Gigas for sure is very gentle and doesn’t do much, readily takes a walk on you if you want them to. They can secrete a liquid that stains the skin and can cause a burning sensation when rubbed into the eyes or comes into contact with the mouth, but these gentle giants only do so when they feel really threatened. Other millipedes do secrete quite a lot of this liquid, Pachybolus Sp. for instance, leaving dark red spots on your hands when being handled. Always wash your hands after handling your millipedes, even if no discoloration is visible at the time.

I keep mine on eco-earth. the gentle giant lives with my madagascar hissers. Males are somewhat rare, plus she has no gonopods so im certain she is a female. She eats vegies and fruits. she is currently in a 20 gal. long and has a little cave to hide in. they need a shallow bowl for drinking and something to stimulate there mind would be appreciated.

How long have you kept your African Giant with the hissing cockroaches? And what do you feed to roaches? I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time, but have been worried that the roaches may attack the millipede. Any help would be great. Thanks.

They also eat soft leafy vegetables and mushrooms. Do not give them avocados - I was given a care sheet that said it’s poisonous to them. My millipede is 10 inches now. I am planning to post photos of my millipede and centipede.
