I don’t think it particularly matters for a Chameleon, considering that they are carnivorous animals and get their calcium from their food. But in case you were wondering, 5.0 is the recommended level for most reptiles that require UVB. On the whole UVB lights have not proved their worth and plenty of people have bred and raised bearded dragons and iguanas without it.

It is hugely important. Zoomed Reptisun 5.0 linear flouresent tubes are the most used and recommended. Length of the tubes depends on cage size. Personally on some large cages and on dark meshed reptariums I use the 10.0’s. DO NOT use compact flourescents-the coiled tubes. They are causing eye issues and burns in some cases. In the chameleon world, only very advanced outdoor keepers with access to good year round sunlight do not use UVB lighting. GETTING CALCIUM FROM FOOD? The commercially available insects (crickets)are quite poor in calcium. Proper supplementation is essential. Most keepers use a regimen of calcium with D3, calcium without D3, and a vitamin mineralsupplement.

Commercially available lights only provide about 5% of the suns rays and only if the animal is within 10 inches. They are completely overrated.

Talk to 3240 in the monitor lizard forum. He has breed Cyclura Lewisi, Cyclura Cornuta, and Cyclura Nubila all without UVB. Accurate temperatures and humidity are far more important and often the cause of MBD and other ailments. I understand that some lizards use UVB rays to help synthesize calcium, but it has been proven unnecessary by many keepers. I just don’t understand why it’s necessary for Chameleons.

That’s right. That’s why you dust you crickets before feeding. Wild insects on the other hand are known to have much higher calcium levels.
