Veiled chameleon baby
I had a veiled chameleon bought for me March 1st this year. a day after I brought him home he shed, and a week or so later he shed again then a couple days ago he shed again. and he has gotten Huge compared to what he was just a month ago. does this mean he is growing fast and that I must be feeding him well enough so that he is shedding that often and gotten so much bigger already? I didn’t realize they grew that quickly. I named him Leo and sometimes he has an attitude. He startled me the first time hissing at me when I’ve had my hands in his cage to feed or spritz his home. I took him out to clean his cage and he seemed fine with that he didn’t want to let go of my hand. but other times he’s hissed and even lunged at me. not biting just trying to scare me I think. any personal input on experiances with your own veiled would be much appreciated. I am an adult enjoying my veiled, sometimes just sitting by his cage after feeding so I can watch him eat and move around with those neat feet of his.

Veileds do grow quickly, so a nutritious diet is paramount. Because of that rapid growth, proper UVB is also paramount along with calcium supplements to ensure proper bone density to support rapid growth and prevent metabolic bone disease.
The attitude you are seeing is normal and just the nature of the beast. Most of the time they will bluff with hissing, lunging, swaying, etc. Some, however, may actually lunge & bite. Generally, as they age and grow accustomed to you, their environment, and your hands inside their cages, they will relax a bit. Most don’t care to be handled once they reach adulthood, however.
My own adult male Veiled will allow me to touch him, stroke his gular pouch and will hand feed. He turns into a raging beast, however, at the sight of a camera or if I attempt to handle him. :)

Veiled chameleon baby thank you so much for your reply. I dont see "teeth" or are they just really small? I figured this behaviour is normal. Ive seen how much hes grown in just a few weeks and how much more intense his coloring is. His helmet, his feet and coloring are much more defined. when he first came to live with me you could hardly tell how his feel were shaped and his coloring was mostly just green. now he has brown, dark green, light green a kinda reddish brown and even yellow. when is he considered a juvinile instead of baby and he is an adult at what age? a year? how old is your veiled.? Veiled chameleon baby Yes-they actually do have teeth, and a chameleon bite can certainly break skin! They are unique in that their teeth are attached to the jaw bone ridge. Even better-some will clamp down and then twist their head or move side to side! My female Veiled can bite through leather gloves when the mood moves her!

Icoms Julirs is correct. Chams definitely have teeth that can break skin and draw blood. I know from experience as well LOL
I have one adult male Panther who will clamp down, not let go and literally grind. He releases only when he’s ready. The resulting "wound" is not bad, but it certainly does hurt, does bleed and does leave multiple tiny punctures.

Cheryl ... I don’t know that it’s written in stone, but generally chams 3 -5 months are considered babies. 6 - 10 or 11 months are juveniles, or sub-adults. 11-12 months and up are adults.
My female Veiled was hatched out January, 2005 and my male hatched out February, 2005 (different clutches), so both are a little over 3 years.

Veiled chameleon baby hmm one person said no and a couple said yes on the teeth. I guess their just not large enough to see on Leo since hes only about four or five months old. when I got him march 1st I asked the store how old and they said couple months. didnt seem to know for sure so I figure dec or jan when he hatched out. I notice now even tho he sometimes hisses at me, when he sees me approach the enclosure, he will actually rush to the one front corner towards me. one time he did so when I lifted the lid and he craweled up and almost out then hissed at me, i pointed my finger at him and he proceeded to grab my finger and crawl up my arm to my shoulder before I stopped him. I love him, he is a very interesting creature. sometimes I like to just sit and watch him.
