Rescue a chameleon???/
a waterfall, 2 branches and some plants. no UVB only a heat lamp - unprotected and easily in reach. one was nice n pritty, the other brown. cna u guess why?? anywhoo. my chameleon cage is completed. it’s wood and mesh 9 all water proofed) 4x2x2 with everything, temps are 35c down to 24c and humidity is neaver lower that 40% even without my misting or using my mist maker humidifyer. when i use it and sray the cage twicea day the humidity is around 80% sound good? my questino is this: should i rehome one or both of these chams? or just buy a healthy one? it’s my first cham but so i do think i sound start with a sound one. but then i feel i sound give these guys a go. obviously this does mean building another cage. thats fine. but should i get both? would this b too much to handle? if i only get one, which one?? the one that looks like it needs a new home the most. or the healthier one?? help! |

Bear in mind that they are currently being kept improperly and if they are "rescues", they were probably being kept improperly then as well. Most likely they both have long-term issues that will result in a shortened life-span anyway. Ironic and sad that the "rescuers" have neglected very important details like a UVB source, dripping water for drinking, and a moving a heat lamp that can easily burn and kill delicate reptiles like chams. 10 short minutes of research online could easily make the difference between life and death of any specialized reptile/animal, even if a "rescuer" is unfamiliar with that animal. I personally never advise anyone, particularly a novice hobbyist, to rescue a chameleon. Most likely the animal will die anyway within a few months ... they are not like dogs, cats, snakes, or other hardier reptiles. I never recommend anyone purchase a chameleon from a pet store chain, or a pet store that does not specialize in the care of less-common reptiles, or from an importer. In doing so, all the purchaser does is further the cause of inhumane capture and importation of wild caught animals, or pad the pockets of stores that rely on quick turn-over and replacement of delicate chams that they don’t take the time and expense to care for properly. Again, the decision is yours. Yes, they will need separate enclosures, separate accessories, a lot of commitment and time, as well as $ (as you already know). It does sound like you’ve done your homework, so maybe, if not too far gone already, they stand a chance in your care. Good luck with that tough decision! Been there, done that. |

By doing that you only further their cause, leading to more animals in the same situation needing "rescue". It might feel hard, but by not rescuing this individual, you will help many more animals in the long run. Also check the legal issues and contact the proper authorities if possible. / Jonas |

basically i first visited a reputable reptile shop which has is always excellent. however today wasa let down. i hadn’t been in a while and the shop was very messy. not only that but the only chams they had were pygmy leafs. two different species in the same viv. low humidity n pine like bark chips. i didnt buy any. they also had no vields becuase their supplier only had ill looking wild caughts. thisshop is pritty good. next i went to the reptile resuce centre down the road ( about 1/2 hour away) i spoke again to the owner, she is a nice lady but insisted that she wouldnt part with the two adult vields, even though there was a sign up saying ’in need of a new home’ she did try to off load a few more turtles on me! last time i went i returnedwith 4 big sliders. anywhoo. i also had a look in the petshop next door, they had an adult vieled. but it has a very strange looknig growth on it’s face.? weird. i ased if they had any others, ’your in luck’ the said. luck wasnt the word. the supplier was delivering a box full of baby vieled. what a sad sight. all were in poor shape, stuffed into little boxes. they were covered in litttle red dots, which were moving! ewwww... parasites. i enquired if they were captive bred. to which the supplier snapped ’ of course they are, you cant get hold of wild ones, it’s illegal.’ - great...... obviously i walked away. chears for the replys guys, but i guess if she doesnt want to rehome them what can i do? - they were very ill looking. basically im going to try and get a captive bred chameleon from a local breeder. seems like the best option. thanks very much. also do i have to keep a baby cham in a smaller cage? or will it be ok in my 4x2x2? |
