 Baby Cham Overheating?

Hello Everyone,

My baby chameleon who is 5 weeks old seems to be overheating in his basking area. I know that for adults the basking area should be 90-95 degrees with the rest of the cage at about 70. This is what I have been doing but he is obviously overheating (open mouth, lethargic) so what temperature should it be at for a baby?

Thanks for your help! I really love him and want him to be healthy.

I forgot to mention that he is a veiled chameleon.

 Baby Cham Overheating?

how big is the enclosure?

there should be enough room to make a heat/cold gradient ( there should be a cool side and a warm side)

what is the temp on the cool side?

if the entire enclosure is hot you may need to get a lower wattage basking bulb or it will dehydrate very quickly...

The enclosure has a hot/cool side. Hot side was at 85-90 and cool side was at 70. Gaston just sat in the hot spot though and wouldn’t move. I’m increasing the humidity to see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice!

Babies will cook themselves if given the chance. Is this little one in all glass? You don’t want to increase the humidity unless you decrease the temps a bit.

 Baby Cham Overheating?

Julirs,

Thanks for the advice. We have him in a glass tank until he gets a bit bigger, then we’ll move him to a screened cage. I have decreased the temperature so it doesn’t go above 80. I also think he was dehydrated so I bought a misting system and he seems to be much happier. I’m afraid I was baking the poor boy. I hadn’t known that temperature requirements were different for babies.
