Veiled temps - please critique
I have had a veiled chameleon for a few months now- He is quite big now- slighter bigger than the photo here- and he is adorable- Archie constantly has a water drip so he is sorted on that- the water drips on the plastic leaves for him into a bowl on the ground. He has a reptile carpet at the bottom- He also has various plastic vines to clamber around on- I put veg/fruit in for him daily but have never seen hi eat it- He eats about 15 crickets from my hand (is this ok or will he became lazy and only want to be fed by hand)- i dust them 6 days a week with calcium. His poop look good. He freaks out when i take him out his viv to clean - goes dark and shame tries to bite etc.- he then calms down a bit- almost as if he gives up- :) I HAVE TWO PROBLEMS 1. They sold me a glass cage with screen on top but i understand he should have mesh all around (if so how do you keep the humidity and temps up?)- how serious is it that i should have a all-screen. 2. His lights: - its a exoterra cage so only two lightspots available on top of the screenroof- they show to the side but have a metal sheet arund so i suppose the heat and light reflects doenwards. Then i added a third light on the basking side- On the one side i have his UVB coil - a reptiglo 5.0 on the other side i have a basking spot light- a 50watt sunglo next to it is the BLUE moonlight also 50 watt He seems to prefer it under the UVB coil- All in all, does this all sound ok to you- what would you change?

Live plants and misting 3X daily usually keeps the humidity where you need it unless you are in a very dry part of the world. Pothos and Schefflera are great plants. As far as lighting most people do not recommend the coiled compact UVB lights-they have been causing eye issues in chameleons and in the cage you have they are way too close. Get the highly recommended Zoomed Reptisun 5.0 linear tube and then just a regular household bulb for basking-make sure you have a great thermometer-for that age basking should be around 90. You won’t need any nighttime heat unless temps drop below 60. Good luck-he sure is a cutie! |
