 My new pygmy setup.

OK, I just got re-setup my chameleons habitat. Hopefully for the better. Still not sure what kind of pygmy it isthough. Anywho, I put in a waterfall, and took out the driftwood. He never climbed on it, and it was too cluttered before. Some pics on his habitat.

Also, can dart frogs and chameleons go together? Nobodys bought the one at my work for a while and I want to give it a good home, I have no problem getting it another terrarium, but I just wondered if they can go together.

 My new pygmy setup.

Waterfalls and chameleons just don’t mix. They are bacteria breeding grounds, and I am afraid that your little male Brev (bearded pygmy) will drown. The dart frog thing is also a no-no. I would get rid of the waterfall and add a few more live plants.

 My new pygmy setup.

dont get me wrong, it looks nice, but i am wondering why you changed it so drastically?

the " cluttered " look is what they prefer..while it can be unsightley to us, it is actually an "ideal home" to them.. the more things they can hide in/under/behind the safer they will feel.

he is very exposed in that habitat, which can lead to a number of problems..

their natural habitats are very densely planted and have a lot of dried leaf litter....

i would place the vine back as well as the fake hanging foliage...

the water fountain is not needed.. they wont drink out of it, and it actually takes up more valuable space that the chameleon could use to move about on....

your pygmy is the R. Brevicaudatus. the most common pygmy on the US market.

his appearance is a little concerning however. he seems awfully thin.... try varying his diet with mini meal worms, mini wax worms and small butter worms.. that should fatten him up a bit.. ( note: those food items can be addicting for some species. so feed them sparingly ).

and NO. dart frogs cannot co-exist with pygmy chameleons. their humidity needs are too high and would likely cause respiratory failure in the chameleon..

also, have you been gutloading the crickets? how often are you dusting them with a vitamin supplement?

 My new pygmy setup.

one last thing.

i noticed in the first pic, that there are either tiny styrofoam balls or small pebbles in the substrate...

what type of substrate are you using?

 My new pygmy setup.

Great, now I’m out $28. I changed it because He never Climbed on the fake foliage, and He was always in the same place. So, what does one suggest as far as plants go? Maybe I’ll use the waterfall for a new cage, and get that dart frog. Sorry if I seem like an idiot, but I’ve just stuck with geckos till a few months ago. I actually only got these (now only one:( ) because I heard they were great starter chameleons, and the breeder wouldnt have a jacksons in for another week, which was my first choice. But now, I think I regret it a little. One of them died two weeks after I got her, and I just dont know what to do for the pygmys. I read up on chameleons for the jacksons I was planning on getting, but ended up with this guy instead which I know are completely different. Do any of you have a pic of a good setup? BTW those arent styrofoam, their small pebbles. I read somewhere that they live on the bottom of the rain forrest floor where it is rocky and mossy.
Oh, and I’ve been dusting every other feeding and gutloading all my crickets as of last week.

 My new pygmy setup.

these are a few of my interpretations of what a successful pygmy home should look like.. you may decide differently..

this one was home to a few pygmy’s. this was one of my most successful setups for breeding....

an older setup.

 My new pygmy setup.

and as far as plants go, home depot has their "indoor plants" that they sell...

most of those are a good choice.. you may need to look up toxicity levels of pants you may be unsure of though..

a few of my tank fav’s:

creeping fig
philodendrons
mini palms
pothos
