 What Species of Chameleon?

Hi all.

I was called today by my local reptile shop saying he had 2 baby chameleons that needed good homes. (they had been brought in by the police after they raided a house) It is believed they are only 6/8 weeks old. Given I have previous experience with a wide range of reptiles, along with the fact I currently own a 4 year old Fischers Chameleon, I agreed to take them in. However, the shop, nor I can figure out what species the chameleons are. (although I have suspicions they could be Panthers) They appear to be in good health and are eating well. The only thing I am concerned about, which you can see in the picture, is that the front right foot of 1 of them is black - as though it has been burnt. However, does anyone know of any disease/illness that a chameleon can contract, which may be causing this ? I am currently housing the new chameleons in similar enclosures to my Fischers.

Any advice on the species would be greatly appreciated - that way I can be sure I am caring for them correctly.

Thank you all !!

You have a Senegal Chameleon.
Juvenile or subadult by the size.
The care is very similar to a Veiled Chameleon if not almost identical.
I would get that foot looked at by a vet.
Infection could be very possible if untreated.

Thanks very much for your quick response.

I will have a look at your profile after I finish this message. I have been back on to the shop and their diagnosis of it all was that the foot was probably trapped at some point? There is no swelling or any other indication of infection. However, I have arranged an appointment with our local Reptile Vet - Jacqui Patterson, who is going to give her opinion.

Like I mentioned, I have 2 of these little fellas and after spending the night settling in they spent this morning giving me plenty of warnings at the front of their enclosures :) (for me that is a good thing).

I’m looking forward to giving these the best life I can.. 1 other question - whilst I appreciate chameleons are usually only kept together when young, would you class these Senegals as being young enough to be housed together ?? (They are currently in smaller enclosures, separated, however, I have had chameleons in the past that co-habited for years - without any clear signs of stress)

Thanks Again

Hello again!

As with most chameleons, I would reccomend that you keep them sperated.
Their are a few species that can be kept in the same cage, but not senegals.
Yes, you can keep young chameleons in the same cage, but yours looks a little older.
Chameleons are solitary animals, so keeping them in the same cage will just cause stress.
The larger of the two will most likely bully the other, or one will have a hard time eating because the other is fater.
For the best results keep them sperated.
They are not a large species, so large cages should not be required.
When they reach adult size a 16x16x30 should suffice, but if you have the room a 18x18x36 would be better.
I would say in the 5 months range, but dont quote me on that.
Size depends on how the animal was taken cage of.
Feeding, supplements, watering, lighting, etc.

 What Species of Chameleon?

Hi, Thanks for your reply.

Since my post I was already concerned that they werent going to live well together so divided an old tank into 3 (to house the 2 senegals and a fischers) - I have a new custom tank being built so they should be out of this one soon (the tank they are all in measures 48 length x 24 width x 36 height) - The width is then divided in 3 to create 3 separate living areas, all with own dripper, heat lamp and plenty of branches etc.

Of the 2 senegals, the 1 pictured is larger than the other one. So for age purposes I will assume the 1 pictured is around 4-5 months and the smaller of the 2 maybe 2-3 months (he is much smaller)...

As they are only eating small crickets I have the crickets in bowls on the bottom of the enclosures from which there is no escape !!! I haven’t seen them eating yet but have been advised that they were definately eating before they left the shop !!

Thanks for all advice !!!

oh yea his or her foots fine , its like what you said , they get it caught in something or when there twisting and bending they will sometimes bruise themselfs , specially when you got a bunch of babies in an enclosure some are bruised from others riding on them but with in days its gone and there back to normal , now if its really black then there something to worry about but other then that your senegals doing fine and keep up on the work and you should have him fattend up in no time

Quick response is lights / basking bulbs all good - no live plants. Plenty of artificial. I have had a Fischers Chameleon since birth (he now 3 1/2) so know pretty much how to care for these little guys - with a little help fom available caresheets :)

It’s definitely not a Veiled. It’s also not a Graceful. It’s a Senegal cham ... probably the most abudantly sold petstore WC species. And back in May, when this thread originally started, it looked thin and not the picture of health. I hope it’s survived the past 3+ months :)

It’s still going to be a Senegal no matter how many different people post their opinions. Might as well stop with the guessing games.

Because honestly, it’s not a game. He asked what type of cham it was so he could properly care for it. While most chams are similar in husbandry, it’s always better to know your species for certain. All this guessing does is make the original poster 2nd guess the care he is giving his pet.

If you want to play guessing games.. post a new thread with pics of chams you find to see who can guess what it is.
