 Veiled chameleon disaster

We had something horrible happen this weekend. I have a male veiled that is appx five months old. with the research we did I thought it was going to be ok to get a female so that we could eventually breed them. I went to the pet store and told them what I wanted to do and everything seemed fine, untill I got the new little female home. there was suppose to be only a couple months differance in age. I put her in the cage and at first I thought it was fine b ut as I watched the male shot his tongue out grabbed the female sucked her head into his mouth and chomped. I spritzed him with water and he dropped her but it was too late. so if any of you are new and just arent sure dont believe the pet store!! I have come to the conclusion that the chameleon has to be appx the same size or just dont put her in with him. come to think of it I had to tell them at the store how to sex the chameleons. we did get our money back but im sick to my stomach to think about what happened to that poor little female.

I can imagine it was pretty traumatic !! but if you say you did all of the research, how is it you didn’t learn that the chams need to be roughly the same size ? p.s. sorry for your loss !!

If you did your research you would have know that you should not have them in the same cage. If your male was only 5-6 months old than the female was only 2-3 months old and that is pretty small. Sorry about your loss but please do some more research!

That is not a conclusion. That is a fact, and with all due respect, there is enough information not just here at this site, but all over the internet that would have advised you against putting a female of any age in with a male over 3-4 months old. Size doesn’t matter. The fact is, chams are solitary in nature. They don’t want to share space period.

There are also plenty of posts right here that would have also advised you not to buy from a pet store and most certainly not to take the advice of a pet store unless they specialize in chams.
You were already given incorrect advice by the pet store you bought your male from (re: your previous post about the red basking light), so you knew they weren’t cham-savvy, and you just stated they didn’t even know how to sex the chams (and Veileds are the easiest of species to sex!), so it is not the stupid pet store’s fault.

Good of you to post your terrible experience so others may learn, but please, as has been stressed over a thousand times here, do the research first!

(and I apologize for coming off so harsh, it’s just that the little female did not have to die if the research had actually been done)
