How do you give chameleons a shower?

I have a tall (almost 4 ft) artificial Monstera (cut-leaf philodendron) I use for cham showering. Make sure the water spray is directed toward a wall so that it bounces back to the plant and doesn’t spray the plant/cham directly.

The shower head is adjustable so I use a fine warm spray. I leave my chams (one at a time only) in about 15 mins, then let them sit on the plant for another few minutes while the bathroom is warm and humid.

Do not leave your cham totally unsupervised and close all doors. I have had one leave the plant, get out of the deep (Jacquzi) tub (despite two curtains), cross the floor and up onto a live plant on a wrought-iron table across the room. Took me about 15 frantic minutes to find him perfectly hidden on the live plant.

Showers are not recommended for small or young chams.

My chams are all at least 2 years and older so they’re used to showers. I don’t shower them nearly as much as I used to simply because I use an auto misting system for all but two cages. Those guys get showers about once a month and they seem to enjoy it. One of my chams I can’t handle at all since he became an adult, so I wouldn’t try to shower him. I have a hard enough time just deep-cleaning his enclosure and avoiding his teeth! lol

hmmm Luna..I am having the same problem with my now 1 year old male sunburst veiled. I have handled him since he was a month old when I go him and he has always been soooo friendly until now. Used to be I couldn’t open the cage door and reach in without him trying to get on my hand or leap out for my shoulder. But NOW I can’t get near him at all!! As soon as I open the cage door he gets into the defense position flattening out and if you get near him he hisses, lunges and tries to bite. I don’t quite understand how this pretty much happened overnight, but it did. This is very disappointing as he has been such a joy for so long ..even a nagging pest at times when I am trying to clean and he wanted to climb on me lol
Hes due for a vet check soon and my biggest worry now is how I am going to get him out of the cage and into a carrier to go. Never had a problem before but now I fear he will rip a chunk out of me when its time to get him out to go. Any ideas for that?

His behavior is normal (a good thing!) for an adult cham. You already know they are solitary and territorial. That’s exactly the behavior one should expect from a (healty) solitary, territorial creature, especially once mature.

I’ve always been of the opinion that a cham that constantly tries to get out of it’s enclosure when a door is opened is a cham that simply wants out. Chams don’t look to us for comfort or companionship, so it wouldn’t make sense that they "like" us or enjoy our company. He just wanted out of his cage, for whatever reasons, so when you opened it up he merely used you as an escape route. Perhaps something just isn’t "right" in his cage ... not enough foliage, too small, in a area of traffic, too hot, too cool, waterfall bugs him, you bug him ... could be anything!

I personally have never handled my chams much at all. Even when they were babies, I never just took them out and let them crawl around. To this day, I’ve never had a cham try to leave it’s enclosure when a door is opened. I have a couple that will come right to the open door and sit for hand feeding, but have never tried to get on my hand, arm, shoulder, whatever. The less tolerant chams merely sit wherever they are when a door is opened ... and wait like snakes to strike when my hands get too close! lol

Try wearing gloves to avoid a bite. Put one hand in front of him, and using the other hand, gently nudge him from behind to "guide" him to your hand in front. Or, use a branch, large dowel or some other long object he can grasp easily and nudge from behind to guide him onto that so you can carry it to the carrier.
