my friend gottee guy wants to know when to start feeding his chameleon after he got its tongue amputated because of the store he got it from did not give it enough calcium.

Sorry, but the best person to answer that would be the vet who does the amputation.
No one here knows anything about the cham’s overall condition, the condition of the tongue or extent of the damage, or how much will have to be amputated, so no one here is really qualified to answer that. Hope it all goes well. Keep us informed, please.

well he was on a car trip and it was trying to eat when its tongue couldn’t retract and his mom called her friend that is a herp vet and asked her wat 2 do and she told her how to amputate it and what antibiotics to get it. luckily his mom is a nurse and she had to amputate a cats toe before so she is skilled enough to do it herself so she did it after she got the stuff from the drugstore. And he was going to canada from florida.

Well, then I guess the herp vet should make the call on when to attempt feeding again. Hard to imagine that a real herp vet would just tell someone over the phone how to amputate a tongue instead of wanting to actually SEE the animal before that decision was made .. nurse or no nurse.

So she not only amputated a cham’s tongue but also a cat’s toe without administering anesthesia?

This whole story sounds VERY iffy. NO veterinarian can tell anyone how to perform surgery. Nurse or no nurse. Both the vet and the mom have broken the law (at least with swedish standards) here.

The tongue might have been rescued if a vet got to look at it, all retraction problems do not lead to amputation. Very strange and disturbing story this.

i read on the internet about this and she talked to the vet. both said to put the chameleon in a temporary cage with one stick on moist paper towels for 24 hours. i did that but the tongue wouldn’t retract and the chameleon was getting dehydrated. i got pedialite and antibiotics (and multivitamin and calcium pills). the chameleon was very stressed and could not eat or drink so we were told how to amutate it. about 3/4 of the tongue was amputated and we were sure the bone (that holds the tongue) was not damaged. there was NO blood loss but the sticky part of the tongue turned yellow. the chameleon is being force fed (it can’t eat on its own) and drinks through an eyedropped/syringe.

and i’m sure the cat was given pain killer and anethesia. and that has nothing to do with this.

Im pretty sure surgery is not to be performed by non-surgents. I wouldnt shout something like this out on the internet, this is a huge nono in my book.

There are no good reasons for this to have happened. Next time show the animal the respect of taking it to a proper veterinarian, and NOT this veterinarian.

as long as she knew what she was doing then im sure the surgery went will with or without medication. You guys shouldn’t sweat the small things. I’m sure she was a pro with chams..

yeah i just found out i have a syst in my neck that needs to be removed. my mom took a class 25 years ago in college though so she knows some stuff and is gonna take care of it for me. thank God for vicodin.
