 Opinions about this housing idea

i saw another guy asked something similar to this but anyways,

I wanted 2 get some panther chameleons & in my room i have a bunch of trees plants logs vines, etc set up like a jungle rite next to the screen widow where natural sunlight shines in, i was wondering if instead of a cage it would work 2 just let him live in there? Cus I know people mainly house them in screen cages anyways, so i would think it would be just like a big screen cage no?
and also, i live in California, so its never really that cold.

So would they be able to healthy?

thanks, id appreciate the advice.

Chameleons are solitary and territorial. Multiple chams in a free-range setup might prove troublesome due to that territorial nature. They will fight, they will bully, they will intimidate one another which can lead to injury, decline in appetite and general health; possibly death. Males will also chase females endlessly.

Multiple chams also means competing for food; the strong will survive, the weak will not.

You also have to be sure multiple chams would be getting sufficient UVB, heat, humidity and drinking water.

People do keep one cham per cage, not multiple chams in one big cage, so it would not be a good idea. Free-ranging one cham can be done, but there again, it’s much easier to regulate, montior and maintain the proper UVB, temps, humidity and the large amounts of water they need in a screen cage.

hmm yes i see, i though maybe a male and female would work because it would be such a big free range space not just a little tree and if i wanted to breed one day but OK, also i would make sure they both got feed equally but yea i see.

thanks

trust me i have alredy tried and it is not a viable plan , too hard to assure their food water and lighting requirements and to do so you would have to make it so the room was not all that usable by people , even if you set them up in a cage in the window, just taking them out for occasional recreational free ranging has its problems (they tend to stress severely when you put them back in their cage )but they some eventually get used to that, but it is difficult. so that is my assesment , either dedicate the room to free ranging or get them suitable cages , either way you will still need all of the usual lighting equip and so forth
