Im trying to figure out what kind of chameleon would be a good choice. Im looking for a breed with a decent color shifting ability that is in the small to medium range. Also where would be a good place to get them(ie web site, or store local to the south jersey area)

A chameleon’s color shifting ability is normally a response to it’s mood and health. Chams will "fire up" when feeling threatened, stessed or in defensive mode. Stressing a cham for color change is not desireable or recommended since they are much more fragile than other more common lizards.
Handling is generally discouraged.
Adult male Veileds generally brighten when they are asleep as well.
Male Panthers are the most colorful in their normal calm state. Their body & background colors are determined by their locale (ie, Ambanja, Ambilobe, Sambava, Nosy Be, etc)

The best place to make a purchase is always from a reputable breeder; the majority of mine have been through on-line breeders.

Panthers and Veileds are recommended starter chams, but be sure to do plenty of research and have a suitable habitat and all necessary equipment ready prior to purchase.
