WHATS THE BEST CHAMELEON FOR A FIRST TIME CHAM OWNER??
I HAVE BUILT A 2X 2X 4X CAGE IN WOOD SHOP AT SCHOOL. I DIDNT REALLY WANNA GET ANYTHING SMALL THAT DOESN’T HAVE A TAIL. I WAS THINKING ABOUT A RUDIS BUT THEY ARE HARD TO FIND CUZ NOT ALOT OF PEOPLE SELL THEM. ANYONE KNOW A TYPE OF CHAMELEON THAT IS SLIGHTLY COLORFUL, NOT TO BIG, HAS A TAIL AND CHEAP?(LIKE UNDER $120???) |

How does bigness of the chameleon affect your inability to breed crickets? In my experience, keeping a chameleon large enough to eat close to full sized crickets is a huge plus. I buy a lot of crickets in bulk, and they grow really fast, so keeping smaller chameleons mean I have to have the right sized crickets at home all the time, meaning ordering in smaller bulk but more often. Besides convenience in feeding, the best animal anyone can get is the animal one is interested in and read a lot about. Its no good getting an animal because someone else says its the best one to start with, if this animal is not what you want. The risk is you loos interest or dont read as much about it. If you want a parsonii as a first chameleon - go for it, just do the research first. / J |

I have a quick question. I’ve been wanting to buy a chameleon for some time now and just not to sure as to what kind to get. I don’t want one that will grow very big, color changing is a plus but not necessary, and is it ok to hold it sometimes? I have zero experience with reptiles, just starting. Can anyone help? |

They are solitary, cranky and do not like to be handled. They are not terribly forgiving of husbandry errors or neglect and tend to stress easily, which can affect their overall health. If you really want a reptile, I would recommend a bearded dragon to start with. They are fairly easy to care for, don’t mind being handled and don’t have all the special husbandry demands of a chameleon. If you are certain you have the time, money and patience for a cham, then I would recommend a Veiled or Panther. They are the most common CB chams on the market. Do not purchase a WC (wild caught) cham that may be cheaper. Most WC chams do not fare well in the long-term and are certainly not a good choice for a new reptile keeeper. Research carefully (both the species and the seller) before you make a purchase so you know exactly what you’re getting into and what care is required before you buy. |
