if its a recently purchased cham, its entirely possible for the eggs to be fertile, however, they will not likely survive long enough to hatch, unless they have been properly cared for from the moment they were laid. if they were laid within the last few days, it may not be too late to set them up. first, you cant just leave them in the cage, they need to be set up in either a commercial or homemade incubator. commercial incubators can be had for well under a $100, a homemade incubator can be as simple as styrofoam delicups (with lids) filled about 1/2-2/3 full with either "hatchrite or fine vermiculite". homemade incubators can be made in an endless variety of ways like coolers with a submersible aquarium heater inside a jar of water, to using digital heat cables, but it pointless to spend any real cash on making one, since commercial ones are so cheap. if you need to go the cheap route just use the delicups as described and put about a 1//2" or more of water in it . the eggs should be placed in the cups in the same orientation as they were laid. to do this just gently mark the top of each egg with a water marker or a q tip with some food coloring, then use a spoon to gently transfer them to a pre-prepared depression in the hatch media that is in the delicups, you want them to be buried about 50-60%. there needs to be water in the bottom of the cups at all times, but not enough to reach the eggs. the lids will need to have a couple of small airholes, thats the tricky part, water will form on the lids, you dont want water dripping on the eggs , but you also dont want the eggs to dry out, so get extra lids and just adjust airholes accordingly. your incubator can be as simple as an unused closet with a space heater. imo, for temps i would try to stay between 78-85*, since temps arent that tightly controlled in that type of situation, going hotter is not recommended. hope you got this in time to be of some good. xantho |
