 Senegal Chameleon

I just got a baby senegal chameleon the other day at the flea market. I felt bad for him as he had no lights or anything on him and was walkin on the bottom of his tank. Hes still small and i had an extra 22 gal size reptarium so we put him in there and seems ok. Nice yellowish green colors. ill try to get some pics up in the next couple of days. Im just wondering how big they are supposed to get. From what I read its only like 10 to 12 inches total length. How big of a cage with i end up needing or that be fine for a while? Any other info on them would be greatly appreciated. I have two female veileds already so I know most of the basic requirement for chameleons(uvb/uva, heat, food, moisture), stuff like that. He has a 20 w full spectrum uvb/uva socket style bulb and a 40 w zoo-med sun glo neodyminium bulb for heat, some small branches and some fake plants hanging down for him to climb on and seems to enjoy it. Hes very spunky(sorry to spunkers, hope Im not infringing on a copyright or anything...j/k) and moves around fairly quickly for sucha little guy.

Senegals will only grow to around 5-7 inches with there tails curled. Hugh is about 7 months now and he/she still don’t know is still very small. So I think that you will be fine in that 22 for a couple of months. I have Hugh in a 62 liter reptarium. I have fake hanging leaves on the walls of his cage which he liked before but now he doesn’t move from his real tree that I have in the middle of his tank he just loves it. He just moves up and down to regulate his heat.

I cant wait to see your pics I want to see other senegals to see the difference from Hugh.

Hope that helps.

yea ive seemed to nitice that they like certain plants. I always go with live ones but i have an Areca palm and a Pothos and he loves the pothos and usually stays on it especilly while sleeping. He does move top to bottom side to side and i think loves his enclosure but he favors the pothos. some of my leaves have recently turned yellow on it and im worried for my plants health.. lol. i have it in a peanut butter plasic container and have potting soil in it and then pretty much filled with water. only gets UVB light from my 5.0 so i think it may not be gettin enough sun... anyone know how to better care for pothos? Id suggest them to anyone tho! they are great!

I have scaflerra trees in with my veileds. i also put in some large branches off of a dead tree to give them more secure places to sleep. kinda funny when you walk to the cage and u see a head slide down like a little submarine. I use cat litter boxes underneath to catch any water from my drippers that the plants dont soak up. this was i can leave the drippers go all day and ive gotten quite good and getting a mind numbing slow drip out of them. i picked that type of plant cause it had a lot of cover and was like 7 bux at home depot. they didnt really have much else i liked. ive actually noticed quite a few new sprouts on my plants. some leaves die and drop off but more fill its place and ive had to cut some back. when my senegal gets bigger ill get a somewhat larger reptarium and put a small live plant inside.

Jdmcrx, are you saying the only light in your cage is from the fluorescent 5.0 bulb?

Gicmo i have a 5.0 for UVB and then i have a 60w ceramic heat emiter for heat. i also have a regular light on in the room and leave it on when its daylight so i have plenty of UVA. (the uvb is on dawn till dust too.)

I just have found that a fluorescent does not give enough visible light for a large cage ( too dark in the cage). You should try using a basking light (just a 60 watt indoor flood ) for a few days instead of the ceramic heater and see if you notice a difference . My chams really perk up with the extra light.
Just a suggestion.

thanks for the suggestion... i will try it, thats the reason i leave my room light on now. It brightens the entire room alot! I like the idea of a ceramic heat emiter tho because it can supply the cage with 24/7 heat w/o supplying UVA at night. Also they last alot longer and arent effected by humidities. I am going to try using a light for a few days instead and see if i notie more activity and then just use the ceramic at night... he is quite active but ive only used this so maybe hell be even more active! thanks!
