 Bug food ?

so i had a thought about mixing up some oatmeal and yellow corn meal, and putting vitamin, calcium and sugar in it. this would be to feed the mealies that go in his cage. Anybody think this i a very bad idea? just looking for a way to give him a little extra.

I’m not sure about oatmeal, but corn is very high in phosphorus and low in calcium, and I don’t see any point to the sugar. I don’t use mealworms for anything, but I do use superworms, and I try to stick with foods that are high in protein and calcium. I haven’t had a cat in almost two years, but I’ve still got dry cat food that I’ve been using for feeder insects. I use vegetables such as zuchini and collard greens for moisture, because those are the vegetables that are strongly suggested for reptiles that will eat them. And now that I’ve got a turtle and he’s rejected two out of three pellet brands I’m adding turtle food to the ’worm’s diets. Throwing them a litle corn or oatmeal in there just to see if they’ll eat it isn’t the end of the world. I’ve given my feeder insects all kinds of odd things just for the hell of it. But do I specifically reccomend it, especially as their regular diet? No.

Another very good reptile vegie is alfalfa. So mixing dog or cat food with rabbit pellets and adding a few chunks of zuchini is probably the best cheap way to go, since you want to throw out the old stuff and start fresh with each new batch of worms in order to keep them clean and healthy to eat.
