New to site - My Whitt isn’t eating :(

Hello everyone :) My collared is Whittaker, he’s 4-5 months old, I was feeding him crickets with calcium, and the occasional meal worm, but about 3 weeks after I got him, he just stopped eating them. I put him on meal worms with calcium and the worms have been eating cricket food so they’re gut-loaded. I checked with the pet store and they said that he should be fine on those, with a butter worm once or twice a week. But all he’s been doing is sleeping, and basking, he hasn’t eaten more than one worm in the past 5 days. Am I missing something? He’s got a heat rock, a cool spot, fresh water, a basking lamp, lots of climbing stuff.... and I give him a warm water bath every couple of days. Please help :( I’m really concerned. Thanks in advance :D

How big is your tank? what temps do u have? ah, leave the heat rock, they can bring lots of trouble like burns!

as we are in winter the temps drop, so their metabolism drop too! it’s normal if they start to heat less, and sleep more time! oh, and they are not arboreal, so do not put lot’s of climbing stuff;)

my pet store recommended the wrong light bulb, so he is definitely cooler than he should be, he’s getting a better light this Friday. By climbing, I meant I’ve got a log and some rocks and stuff, he’s quite jumpy lol It’s definitely a desert tank. He also has a den, and my heat rock is covered by sand so he’s not in direct contact with it, I also check him out regularly and so far he looks physically well... he’s just in his den all the time, all curled up asleep... He’s also got a large tank, it’s a 30 long Critter cage.

I agree the heat rock can be dangerous, they can get badly burned just use it without plugging it in.

Collareds can be very fussy to try to vary what you feed him, crickets, locusts, silkworms, roaches as staples waxworms for treats. Feed him every other day.

As for heat collareds like it HOT. He is probably spending lots of time sleeping if the temps are on the low side.

Just re-read the post I would stop with the mealworms, they contain a lot of chitin which is hard for the lizard to digest.

As they use the heat for digestion, when was the last time he pooped? Maybe he is a little blocked up and thats why he is off his food?

If so get the light changed ASAP so that the temps are correct - you can use a normal household bulb - give him a waxworm to eat that his been dipped in a little olive oil hopefully this will get things moving.

If you have a read of some of the posts on here a lot of them are about their lizards not eating properly - think its just a collared thing

Ok, I got it worked out, I changed his lights to a much warmer one, he’s doing much better. I also added some different stuff to his diet. He still won’t eat crickets, so I’ve kept him on gut-loaded meal-worms (with calcium powder), but I also added Pheonix worms for some extra calcium, and I’m currently trying out different fruits and veggies to see if he’ll eat some of them... speaking of which, any suggestions on other food sources? I don’t care if it’s meat or otherwise, I know they primarily eat insects, but the local reptile supplier doesn’t have a lot of options. The only thing I haven’t tried really is super-worms, and the freeze-dried canned stuff... He seems to be doing well on the stuff I’m feeding him, but I just wanna make sure he’s getting the proper nutrients. Thanks in advance :D
