 Shedding

Hi, i got a Collared afew days ago, and within the 1st night he started shedding, he as taken most of it off but he still hasn’t taken any off his neck and head, should i worry about this? Its like he as a cape on. It isn’t causing him stress as i can see, he is still active and eating. I have tried misting him afew times aswell, and soaking him in water but not his head, i was scared he would drown? lol

another question is substrate. ATM i am using that calci-sand stuff, he seems to like it, eats it sometimes and plays around in it alot, but when it gets in the water it goes horrid, it smells, it sticks to him and the vivarium and looks a complete mess!

can someone please tell me a good substrate for collards? maybe plain sand or something?

anyhow the new vivarium am getting (tomorrow) :D is 3foot, will have basking lamp in it and uv light ect and a day/night thermostat for a drop down in heat at night, with a red inferred bulb.

let me say he is very very very active, he will jump around constantly for 10hours lol, eats well, both cricks and the odd waxworm, he loves the waxworms but i hear there fatty so try to keep them as treats.

heres a pic of my collard, this was the 1st day i got him.

thank you.

use playsand!! my opinion personally, and a widely held opinion on many forums is that calci sand is BADDDD!!!!!. i had this discussion on kingsnake.com. go there and check it out. i had the same question you did and the answer i got is that calci sand is bad for collareds. it may be ok for some other desert dwelling reptiles like leo. geckos ,and uromastyxs but its bad for collareds and beardies. so yeah!! they are more agressive eaters, and tend to get sand with their crickets!! i wouldnt worry about shedding. My guys recently shed and it took them a couple of days to shed their tails after they shed the rest of their bodies. so i wouldnt fret to much.

Ok thank you. i will get playsand if i can. is any playsand ok? obviously i don’t mean from the local park lol

He is starting to get the skin of his head now, its all off under his head and neck its only left on the top of his head. :)

new vivarium came today, will post pictures when its all set up and the stuff arrives. just another quicky.... is simplicity the best thing for collards? i read alot they like to run and jump, so don’t over do the tank, leave alot of floor space. i think i will go that route ( because the vivarium as cost me out of pocket ) lol

Grr, everywhere i read people say every kind of sand is bad for lizards!, i don’t know, lizards live in deserts where there’s SAND!

I am thinking of getting this from Argos in UK

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001001&langId=-1&searchTerms=play+sand&Submit=GO+%3E

I want something that will make the viv look like a desert. Repti Carpet or bog roll isn’t going to look good lol

all tiles i could but might be expensive, i will look at B&Q
