New to collareds, just purchased one.

I purchased a collared lizard, and though I’m not familiar with collareds inparticular, I breed bearded dragons, so am familiar with desert lizards. I have him in a 29 gallon, with sand, a log, basking light with the basking spot at 95 and gradually cooling from that point, and fake plants for him to hide in. The little guy doesn’t have much colour, I’ve seen pictures of ones that were a brilliant blue. is this indictave of males? I’m considering putting a pair in the tank, but I would like opinions on this as well.

I’ve read that there are many species of collareds. Is there a way to ID which species mine is? thanks!

Jen

Eh.
There isn’t really a way to identify them without performing tests.
And your cage sounds fine, just be careful he doesn’t eat the sand.
Pics?

Congrats on getting your first collared!!! Your tank set up sounds good a little warmer at the basking sight wouldnt hurt, mybe 100F-105F would be more suited as they like it hot hot. do you have a uv scource? what colours are your lizard? The bule collareds you where refering to are are crotophytus collaris but you cannot give an accurate indication of sex just by the colour..

You can go to this website
http://www.geocities.com/crotaphytus
It has pics of alot of the different types of Collareds. You should be able to match yours to one of those.
Hope that helps ya some.

They can be tamed over time and if you are patient enough he will be able to be handled as they do seem to enjoy it, well mine does anyway.
And yes they do make good pets excellant in fact.
