...I’m excited because we’ve just booked a two week vacation in Canada and Montana in August, and although I’ve been to some parts of the US, especially the southwest, I’ve never been to Canada or Montana before. We’re going to Alberta - Banff, Jasper and Glacier National Parks and having five nights in a chalet in Montana, near Missoula. So if anyone lives in or knows these areas and has any particular tips of good places to go, please let me know! I don’t suppose we’re that likely to see snakes, but I’ll be happy to see all kinds of wildlife and I guess you never know!

LOL! You could squeeze down the side of the seat maybe, Sam, or in the hold with the baggage. Bit cold perhaps, and not a lot of oxygen around. Still... worth it I’m sure...! Where was it you used to live in Canada? Toronto?

Ozzy, thanks, we definitely have to do that. My husband’s been to Edmonton before and told me about the mall - sounds like more than a shopping center. We’re flying into Edmonton so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem to go there!

You will LOVE Monatana! Glacier national Park is AMAZING (not many herps there but the place is beautiful!!!!!!!). Take a Jammer tour; it’s pretty neat. Don’t do the horse back riding that is right down the street. They take HORRIBLE care of the horses. If there’s another place to go riding, maybe OK--it was really pretty.

For Canada, I have only been around Niagra falls a coule times & once I went to someone’s relative’s cabin somewhere near there.

Thanks guys! Yes I’ve heard the scenery in Montana and the Canadian Rockies is out of this world - and of course have seen pictures. What’s a Jammer tour, Sevy? That’s interesting about the horses - you think of Montana almost being synonymous with horseback riding - but of course everywhere has places that don’t care for the animals properly, unfortunately. I’m hoping to see some birds of prey and maybe bears...!

Thanks sw1c - that sounds like a lot of fun and we’ll check that out. I’m sure we will enjoy it - I’ve wanted to go to Canada for ages but somehow haven’t got around to it till now. I can’t wait to see Lake Louise because it’s so famous and looks amazing in pictures. It must be lovely where you live... nice and rural. I bet when we go we’ll want to move there... I love the UK because I’ve always lived here and there are lots of nice things about it - and it doesn’t always rain! and I like the people - but there’s something about those wide open spaces...

Come on now Sam, it’s sunny today! LOL. I agree it’s rained a lot recently though - but then not last summer but 2005 was very dry and warm. Mmm, sounds lovely seeing birds of prey in the back garden. I’ve got a book on owls written by a Canadian who lives in the middle of nowhere in Manitoba and it sounds absolutely idyllic - he gets great gray owls and snowy owls in the garden. Snowy owls! - my favourite - I adore them. Anyway, yes glad you like the oxygen tank - put on lots of warm clothes too as it tends to be -50C outside at 30000 feet.

Jessica,
Glad to hear you are comming to Alberta. I have lived in Alberta my whole life. Here are my suggestions related to previous comments.
1) If you want to do horse back riding do it in Alberta. All down the alberta side on the Rockies there are real wilderness outfitters (trail rides) Some of the best are around the town of "Nordegg".
2) There are wild snakes in Alberta. Garders throughout the provience, and (believe it or not) rattle snakes in south eastern Alberta.
3) Banff area is beatuful. Take a day (at least) to do a trail hike. You can see (and feel) the real beauty of the mountains as soon as you get a Km or 2 from the roads. I can suggest specific trails if you would like.
4) If you want to see grizzly bears, the highest concentration is in Waterton/Glacier. (Waterton is the national park in canada that straddles the US boarder, connected to Glacier).
5) Have Fun!!!

Thanks Dart! I didn’t realise you were from Canada. I knew you guys would come up with lots of ideas. Doing one of those trails and getting right out into the wilderness sounds ideal. I knew there were rattlesnakes in Canada but didn’t know there were in Alberta - it would be fantastic to see one of those! I’ve seen programs on TV where garter snakes come out of hibernation in Canada and have a breeding frenzy - amazing. We saw a western diamondback in Arizona last year and it was gorgeous. Only little - smaller than our corns! We’ve booked nice hotels too so it will be a real treat to look forward to for the next five and a bit months (not that I’m counting or anything...).

We’re off to see if we can find some adders tomorrow. We know a guy who showed us where and how to find adders last spring, as they emerge from hibernation, and he emailed us to say adders have been seen out already in February - it’s been a mild winter and spring is early. So we’re off to look!

Jammers are these old bus things that have been in the park forever. they’ve been modernized but it’s still kinda neat to ride in one. they take you around the park & show you some sights. they stop a few times for photos & if you see wild life (which you will).

Here’s a link with a pic of one:

Fantastic - they look exciting! Very authentic. I’ve been to Zion, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Bryce Canyon and the article says they used to have them in those too - I wonder if they still do? I can’t remember now if we saw any. I could persuade myself we did. Anyway, that’s definitely another thing for our list... pity we’re not going for two months, not two weeks...

Yeah, we saw the adder. It was the time we went with the expert who picked it up with a snake stick, which it loved no end - not, hence the coiled position - and put it somewhere where we could photograph it at close range in the open. We’ve seen adders on our own several times since but you have to know where to look, really specific places, and early spring is the best when they’re coming out of hibernation and warming up. In summer they don’t need to bask so they hide away more and are harder to find except by chance. It’s actually tomorrow we’re going, not today, so I’ll let you know if we find any!

We got all but one trinket eating eventually - one ate with lizard maker - and sold them to Darren at CPR, who no doubt has got that stubborn one eating by now. If you’re in there at any point you could ask him!

Snake sitting - I guess the friend who’s done it before. To be honest, though, I feel a bit awkward about asking her now because I’m leaving this job in May and I work with her, and I know she feels a bit left in the lurch by my leaving. I’ll see how things go. She may also be away in August too. I’ll have to see what’s best to do when the time comes. As for the eggs, she mated on February 21st so I’m hoping she’ll lay the eggs at the end of March/early April, and they’ll hatch in June and we’ll have the babies feeding and sold by then. She doesn’t look gravid yet, but of course she may not have ovulated yet or she could be one of those very rare infertile snakes... seems unlikely though, as Kathy Love says it’s very rare - I imagine much rarer than in humans.

Sorry all, this has nothing (OK... a bit) to do with corn snakes

Hey Jessica,
I was just thinking, another thing that is pretty cool to do is an icefields bus tour. About halfway between Jasper and Banff is the Columbia Icefields. They have these 4X4 giant bus things that drive you up to the middle of a huge glacier and you can get out and look around a bit. Very cool!. If you have the cash, a really (I mean really!) cool thing to to do is take a helicopter tour or helli-hiking. For example: They can fly you over mountains/lakes/glaciers, etc., then they can drop you at a high mountain lake or ridge top. You can hike for a bit with or without a guide. Then they come back and pick you up. The best company I know for this is http://www.icefieldheli.com A bit expensive, but the experience of a life time.

Just some more ideas...

Hell, Maybe I should give up my career as a neuroscience professor and become a travel agent!

And but the way, here are a few new pics of Dart. He is about 34" now and doin great.

well, im going to be down in devon in a month, so when me and my grandad go out for walks in the woods with the dog, im gonna go looking ,looks like a excellent area, i haver to find someting! giant common, so if i dont find something, i will be amazed, i told me mom what i was looking for ( adders) she had a funny look on her face!ill find a good stick for a hook, lol

dont forget though, you then still have the possiblity of your snake double clutching, which wil lthen possibly leave her laying eggs whilst you are gone, and you dont want them to go bad

im going to CPR this coming sat, my finred wants a corn, so im taking him up, if i remeber, ill ask him about the trinket!

Dart - thanks so much for the info - that heli tour sounds absolutely brilliant. I’ve always wanted to go in a helicopter and to land on top of a mountain or glacier would be amazing. I think my husband might take some persuading about the helicopter though - the funny thing is we both used to take flying lessons and got some way to getting our private pilot’s licences (something to take up again in the future, I think) but at the same time he’s scared of helicopters, thinks they might fall out of the sky etc. I’ll have to twist his arm, because that’s not logical! Anyway don’t worry about being off topic because the whole thread has been somewhat off topic, and thanks again. I’m going to print this thread out and take it with us when we go so I’ll remember all the suggestions everyone’s made. Are you really a neuroscience professor? I’m a GP (family doctor), so I have a background in science too. And Dart looks really lovely - he seems to have little white on him - is he a sunglow?

Sam - yes, Devon sounds promising for adders. The dog may well find them for you, but make sure he/she doesn’t get bitten - dogs can suffer very badly from adder bites, even dying - being that bit smaller than humans. About Elizabeth, I hadn’t thought of her double clutching, I suppose because Henrietta never has. If she looks like double clutching, would you be around and want to look after her (if I brought her over of course) while we’re away?
