 Post regurge skinnyness

My snow is doing much better now 2 weeks after his regurge. I waited 10 days and fed him one pinkie every 4/5 days since. He is coming on in leaps and bounds thankfully but he seems to have lost a little bit of weight.

Now I’m not sure whether to go back up to 2 pinkies or keep him going at one pinkie and feed him every 3 days opposed to every 4/5 as I have been doing. The guy in the shop didn’t know when he hatched because his brother handles the hatchlings and he was away when I bought him. I guess about 4/5 months but I’m not quite sure as he seems quite small. I did try him with a fuzzy once and he managed to eat it but he did have to struggle with it for such a long time and the bulgevremained for almost a week. I didn’t want him to stress out so I’ve kept him on two pinks since.

I know one slightly larger prey item is better than one so what would you guys recommend?

Thankies

I would keep him on 1 pinkie for a few more feedings. Then you could try 1 large pink or 2 small pinks--I would cut slices in the mice’s skin to make them easier to digest. I wouldn’t feed more than every 4 days. (I usually feed once per week, even babies)

I’ve been keeping a close eye on his digestion time and it looks good. He seems to still be really hungry after I’ve fed him a pinkie (he paces the length of the tank for hours) and he is definitely a little skinnier than before.

He is 19" in length and my best guess at age is around 4/5 months. I know usually at this age most corns are one one fuzzy a week and I would like to build his weight back up as soon as possible. I planed to continue feeding one pinkie every 5 days for another two weeks or so but they are not sustaining him and I worry he wil loose too much weight.

Thanks for the advice I’ll try cutting the skin.

Snakes don’t tend to lose weight very quickly. Even when underfed, it takes awhile. Has he ever been checked for internal parasites? That could contribute to the weight loss and the regurge.

But your plan to stay with one pink every 5 days for two more weeks sounds good to me.

There was a small, non-scientific experiment done with a clutch of babies & the ones fed sliced pinks grew bigger faster than the ones fed intact pinks.

I was wondering about parasites too, Sonya, but didn’t want to be all doom and gloom. I think a fecal sample would definitely be a good idea. I’ve had two snakes regurge in the past - both have recovered very quickly without losing any weight.

I have thought about internal parasites and I would give anything to be able to get him to a herp vet if only for a check up to see what they think. The nearest herp vet is over 60 miles away from me and I don’t drive. Plus I’d be very unhappy having to drag him all that way.

He is due for a feed today so I will put a few cuts in the pinkie. He seems quite healthy in general. His last shed was a perfect whole, he has never missed a feed and he is active, searching round his tank every day. I was wondering if it may seem like he has lost weight because he might be focusing more on his length growth more than his weight as he seems to be getting longer every week lol.

I’m a bit paranoid so I hope that is what it is. My camera has just packed up so I can’t even take any pics.

That may be the case - as with humans, they can go through growth spurts and get a bit thinner at that time. It sounds as if you’re keeping a close eye on him and I’m sure all will be fine.

What you said could be right, but if you still wanted to have a fecal analysis, a dog & cat vet could run it for you. It is done the same way and the parasite eggs look the same. The medication is usually the same, too but in different doses.

Keep us posted on his progress!
