Petco told I will disagree... the one I use is not bad...
yes, they have a few ill-informed employees,
but are most receptive to comments about the lack of knowledge they have.
I have educated a few on some things, and the other employees
(the Current regular reptile care givers) seem to know what they are doing.
Occasionally wrong ifo goes out, but when I am there, my b/f drags me away,
telling me, it’snot your job... LoL ...yelling to the customer... no you need to do this *Get stuffed in car* and drive away
b/f calls me snake freak

Petco told Petco isn’t that bad. Its not their fault for giving bad advice. As the consumer it is your responsibility to find out how to take care of your animal. Besides not all petco locations are bad.

Petco told Okay, I really hate seeing these posts. People need to remember that each and every store in those two chains are independability run by a regional manager. If your local store is inadequate to your standards, contact your regional manager. Most are really nice to work with the customers of their stores. As for knowledgeable employees, that’s hard to find. If more reptile owners applied for the jobs, petco and petsmart would snap them up and use them. I for one have worked for both stores. At petco, I covered the reptiles and hermit crabs. If we got an animal I didn’t know, I went home and researched it. I (to my knowledge) have never given a customer the wrong information at either location. At my current job at petsmart, I cover small animals and the reptile section. It is hard when you have a manager who does not understand the less common reptiles. [as in common frogs and hermit crabs T_T]
All in all, the moral of this tale, find something wrong? Report it. Ask questions. Educate. Most of my fellow workers are fine with being told care tips, cleaning tips, etc.

Petco told The general manager at my petco is really good; she’ll take a two dollar "feeder" mouse to the vet if it’s sick; I work there and have brought animals (including reptiles and amphibians, not just the fuzzy animals) and I personally saw a vet bill to petco for close to $800 for treating two hampsters that had gotten in a fight and a guinnea pig with a vitamin c deficiency that some customers relinquished to us. . . we’re constantly taking in people’s animals when they don’t want them any more or can’t afford them, and we make sure if there is any sickness/malnutrition/anything sketchy looking that they go to the vet. After the sick animals are taken care of (there is an isolation room where sick animals are kept away from the public and are on a medication routine) and healed, they’ll go out for adoption. My petco also promotes adopting an animal before buying one, donates money on a regular basis to the animals shelter (the petco coorporation is responsible for donating billions of dollars to animal welfare organizations all over the country). I agree with the above post that it is the responsibility of the pet owner to get as much information as possible before getting a pet and not just to rely on a few quick "tips" from a sales associate at a pet store . . . I also think it is the responsibility of a manager to make sure that all her or his staff are well educated on the animals they sell. It makes me sad to think that there are so many stores out there where the staff are not being educated as they should be, and it’s too bad that a company that does a lot of good has the unfortunate reputaton as petkill due to this. Just my two cents.

Petco told Hi Luv -
Quote: My petco also promotes adopting an animal before buying one I have tried looking into the adoption thing on their web-site, but alsways get lost, more to looking at stuff - LoL - but can never get any info on there to find out how to go about the adoption thing.
How does that work (if you know)?
The Petco I use, I have never seen, or heard about pets they have (if any) up for adoption.

Petco told Hi Marg! Different Petcos may do things differently; here basically people just check in with a staff on whether they have anything up for adoption. Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes no. Like for instance, I would say our anoles get put up for adoption a lot when they lose their tails , same with the leopard geckos. . . we can’t sell them, so after they’ve been in quarantine and have healed/proven they are good eaters, with no other issues, then we’ll put it up for adoption. I would just go in to your store, ask to talk to a manager, and just ask if they offer anything up for adoption . . . maybe that particular store doesn’t?? Also, if you’ve been to the website, then you have probably noticed that Petco has a relationship with Petfinder . . . (at our store we have a little computer set up so you can go to petfinder dot com and see if the animal you’re going to buy might not be up for adoption somewhere first). It’s actually pretty cool . . . obviously there are some regs about the adoption in the store; the general manager first has to approve that animal to be able to go up for adoption before it goes anywhere. I know my manager won’t approve anything for adoption until it’s been off of any meds/treatment and doing successfully 72 hours later (as in eating, pooping, drinking, no re-occuring symptoms). Good luck to you!
