Are corn snakes good "starter" snakes?

My 17 year old son wants a snake. He’s really wanting a Ball Python...but they are so...big, and snake-looking! I thought a corn snake would be better for him since he’s never had a snake before. We’ll do a lot of research before we actually get one, just was wondering if they were good snakes to start with. Thanks in advance

corn snakes and ball pythons are good starter snakes the both get to about the same length with ball pythons being fatter. No matter what snake you get, they are going to look "snake-looking"

Corns and balls make very good starter snakes, and I will go over the basics.

Corns:
Come in a large variety of color morphs, none of which are too expensive.
Are almost always willing to feed.
Very pretty.
Adjust to handling very well.
Do not take up too much space, and are fairly low-maintnence.
Very easy to breed.

Balls:
Come in a few variety of morphs, most of which are very expensive.
Sometimes fast for long periods of time, which often worries new snake owners.
Pretty to some, but others find them, as you said, to "snakey".
Adjust to handling well.
Need somewhat larger cages, and need care specifics to the tropics.
(I do not have personal experience with breeding these snakes, so I do not know how easy they are to breed)

Both:
Considered good beginner snakes.
Have many good books written about them that provide an invaluable resource.
Are somewhat easy to find in the pet trade from reliable breeders.

Here are some facts:

* Ball Pythons will get larger in girth than corn snakes.
* Ball Pythons are probably the pickiest eaters of all snakes. They can go "off-feed" fairly easy.
* Ball Pythons prefer to stay hidden and don’t come out just to move around as often.
* Ball Pythons cost more to purchase. Especially if you want a colorful morph. (Albino = $800 - $1,200)
* Ball Pythons do not tolerate less than perfect temperatures and humidity.
* Ball Pythons (if you intend to breed them in the future) yield 2 - 10 eggs (average is 6).

* Corn Snakes get long but not very large in girth. Corns can get 5’ - 6’ long!
* Corn Snakes will eat just about anything...Mice, rats, chicks, ducklings, etc.
* Corn Snakes also spend most of their time hidden...but they also like to explore and climb!
* Corn Snakes start around $20 and go up to $50 on average. (Albino = $30 - $35)
* Corn Snakes thrive in temps 79 - 86. Humidity is good around normal household levels (50% - 55%)
* Corn Snakes (if you intend to breed them in the future) yield 8 - 30 eggs.

I own corns, Ball Pythons and Brazilian Rainbow Boas. As a starter snake...I will always recommend a corn snake! They make fantastic pets!!!

I dont understand why reptiles are so cheap in America! I mean if i was to go out and buy an albino BP here it would send me back a good few grand and corn snakes for sale barley fall below £40.

Corn snakes are great first time snakes! I bought 2 and then went out this weekend and bought one more! Couldn’t help it they are so addicting.

They are easy to care for and not very picky. The most expensive thing you will do is buy the snake get set up. My snakes were $25 for the Miami, $100 for the Creamsicle Okeetee and $29 for the one I just got, an Anery.

My oldest son is 11. He has held and fed the 2 babies and loves every minute he gets to hold them. They have gotten used to him very fast and have never struck. He has read books and care sheets and is now trying to learn different morphs and some genetics. My other kids like to watch the snakes or hold them but he is the one thats really into them.
I enjoy sitting at night, after the kids go to bed, and hold them. One at a time of course. LOL

The Anery- no name yet we dont know if its girl or boy

Miami- Zita

Creamsicle Okeetee- Zaine

not sure where your looking for your snakes but I picked up a carolina corn for a tenner and a snow corn for fifteen quid fancied the albino Royal (ball) python but didn’t have £900 spare so albino Burmese at £95 it was.
As to are corns a good starter snake yes yes yes. Feed well, easy to keep, basic setup, tame easily and even if a baby bites it’s not really painful. Just be advised they can vibrate their tails and if not aware the rattle can be off putting.
PS. I Love my Royals as well
