 I am confused

On my last post "Possible New Additions" I put a pic on there of an Anery het bloodred and charcoal. Some one on that post said it was a pretty charcoal. Well I got to looking and it does look more like a charcaol than and anery. I don’t see any yellow pigment on the sides. Is it possible that this is a charcoal and not an anery. Or could it be because it is het for charcoal it is just showing the charcoal gene very well?? The other anery I have is darker saddles and has the yellow on its sides.

Aneries take a while to develop the yellow, several months usually. I think you said this snake is about four months old, and yellow is not always very visible by four months. However, I must say the snake does look a little like a charcoal as the contrast between the saddles and background is less dramatic, typical of charcoals. It can’t be explained by its being het charcoal, as an anery het charcoal will look the same as an anery not het charcoal - like a normal het amel, or whatever. It’s rare for a het to show itself at all - it can with bloodred, but not with charcoal. It’s possible the snake may actually be anery AND charcoal. It’s difficult to say, and if it is anery and charcoal you may never know because I think these snakes look like charcoals, basically. If it is anery it should develop yellow, as you say. What does the breeder say?

The breeder says its an Anery het bloodred and charcoal. She has a lot of reptiles; boas, corns and lizards. I also have seen pics of her cages in the home. I would hope she knows what she is talking about. Here is a link she gave me for the pics she has online. Check it out and tell me what you think.

Your probably right. It is only 4-5 months old so needs a little more time.

Ok just to see what an expert might say I sent the pics I have on here to Don Soderberg and this is what he said to me---

Quote:

On anery A corns, the yellow can begin after a couple of months or after a year. That yellow is an accumulated color from their diet. Some show it soon and some never show it.

Yes, the other is a charcoal for sure. It may not ever have yellow, though most have a blush of yellow as adults.

Write if you have any other questions.

Wow, that’s really interesting that Don Soderberg thinks so too! I didn’t know the yellow on aneries was accumulated from their diet... fascinating. Now you can correct the breeder... LOL!

Wisema-

Thats where I bought the first 2 corns I have. And yes he was a wonderful help. I recomend to most people that want to look at corns to look at his place first. He has some amazing snakes.

Now I’m not saying anybodies wrong,or anything like that....
But I will say its no more then mere speculation that aneries get their yellow from the foods they consume...It hasn’t been proved.....
If you stop and think about it,they really don’t feed on things that are saturated in yellow pigments.Even it they did,the likelihood of it not being broken down in digestion is probably not to high....

Just thought Id throw that out there....

It seemed a bit strange to me too, but I thought as Don said it it must be right, LOL! Is that true that it’s just speculation? I hadn’t heard about it at all until it was mentioned here.

Its definitely het for bloodred i`d say. The belly scales fading in the middle give it away. Bloodred is one of the few genes which can display certain characteristics when carried as a het.

Well now I know why it looks like a charcoal. The breeder sent me the info on the parents. The dad is a Bloodred het Anery and Charcoal and the mom is Anery het Charcoal and Bloodred. They will arrive today and I can get a good look in person and take a few pics for all.

Is the yellow on aneries accumulated from their diet?
If so,are there other morphs that can get color from their diet?

That is the speculation among many breeders (accumulated from the diet). But I don’t know that it has ever been proven, or would be noticeable in other morphs.
