Hello

My son and I have been reading your forum since we got his snake and would like to personally thank you guys for the great information. We bought the snake "Rojo" from Petco a couple of days after Christmas. Some salesperson of course didn’t work in the snake department gave us the feed it crickets speech. Upon returning to the store to purchase the crickets a different salesperson gave us the real deal about feeding and was upset that we were given that info. In any case we really didnt do too much research before getting the snake and we paid for it lol. After 5 days Rojo escaped before we could even feed him....3 days later after I’m fuming mad that nobody told us that we had to get clips for his tank he shows up. (needless to say we bought clips) We offered the pinky and he would not eat..but thats where this site came in handy about "braining" and it worked like a charm. As a matter of fact I continue to use this method that way he will always know when its feeding time. (wishful thinking maybe...but im hoping it will save us a bite or two even tho i know they rarely bite) We do not know how old he is because we never thought to ask and he recently had his first shed with us (complete). From what I have read he is an Amelanistic, but if someone could give more info or if I have it wrong please let me know. The camera doesnt really show his true colors too well...he tends to be more reddish than orange like in the last picture. I would like some reassurance on feeding. Recently we decided to weigh him and he weighed 4oz (113g) and according to that info we had been under feeding him. We were feeding 1- 2g pinky every 5 days. We decided to give 2 pinkys 2days ago on feeding day and no regurg nothing. According to the weight charts though he should be eating 14–20 g meals and by giving 2 pinkys (4g) it is still not close. I bought several packages of pinkies so we would not run out and now we have 4 pinks left. I plan on going to the store and getting 14-20g mice for him and feeding him one and then on the next feed (maybe 7 days since its larger) give him the 2pinks again going back and forth until the pinks are gone. Sorry this post was a little long just wanted to give some background and say HI!

p/s...we will be getting a digital therm. soon and yes we know the tv is for hamsters and the ladder is for birds, but he loves them both. He has slept in his tv numerous times already. lol

Maybe im partial, but isnt he the cutest lil thing......he (or she) has a heart near his nose and a wishbone on his head lol

That is a gorgeous snake! I am not too experienced with corn morphs, but to me it looks like an ultramel because of the brightness, but someone will tell you for sure. He’s awesome! I’m glad you found him again :)

He’s definitely an amel, but when I was just looking at the ultramels online, I’m not so sure he is ultra...but he’s very pretty anyway!

Nice snake! I’m not brilliant with corn morphs either and the babies change colour as they grow older (mine was two shades of brown when I got him, now he’s red, orange, caramel and black) but to me it looks like a reverse okeetee, but the others say it could be an ultra, so I’d listen to them above me.

Congrats on your snake! Your setup is really nice and too bad you had to learn the hard way about the clips for the tank. But at least it turnded out for the best.
As far as what morph your little one is--it’s a Reverse Okeetee(Amel) not an Ultra. Amels come in a wide range of orange, reds, whites and yellows. Yours is very nice and is going to be beautiful full grown.
For his food-I would Keep doing the 2 pinkies until you run out then move up to a fuzzy. Remember the rule of thumb is- food items shoud be no bigger than 1 1/2 times the thickest part of the snake(girth). If you feed items too big he may regurge.

Good luck and hope to see more pics of the little guy/girl as it grows.

You have an amelanistic, I can see the difference in the pics, and petco would charge $200 for an ultramel. Sorry for the confusion!

its an amel, for the feeding just remember not to overfeed, as it can cause obesity. but gorgeous snake.

I was thinking it was more of a Reverse Okeetee(Amel) also, but i read on wikipedia "Albino Okeetees are not okeetees, they are selectively bred amelanistics" so i will assume that is what he/she is. Think we are going to take it to the vet to find out if it is male or female. One day we would love to breed it, but we will do our research this time lol.

I thought Reverse Okeetees were simply okeetee corns crossed with an amel so that they lacked black pigment and so had white where okeetees have black.

This is the info on wikipedia describing the morphs:

Reverse Okeetee (Selectively bred Amelanistic) an amelanistic okeetee Corn Snake which has the normal black rings around blotches replaced with wide white rings. Most are high contrast snakes with light orange to yellow background and dark orangish/red saddles. Note: Albino Okeetees are not okeetees, they are selectively bred amelanistics.

Amelanistic (sometimes called red albino) Corn Snakes, produced from a single recessive genetic mutation, show wide variations in colors. They can be almost solid orange, to a dark orange on a light orange background, or red/orange on a very light background. These varying color schemes are due to reflective cells in the skin and iridophores which may contribute to subtle shades of color. These red eyed snakes lack the melanin pigment.

Kathy Love has several snakes like this one listed as albino okeetee. I guess that is what we will tell people when they ask. Here is the link to her pic... albino okeetee Kathy Love Pic
