 My enclosure (criticism welcome)

I have a 10gal with my 5-6 month old corn inside. I currently have a heat lamp but will be getting a UTH as soon as I can. I know that I went the cheap way with toilet paper rolls. They are okay right? I stuck some under the log just incase the log was too big. I placed black construction paper on 3 sides so he/she feels more safe. Criticism welcome.

Thanks for your input and no i dont have any sticks and im not sure if I will get any until I get a bigger cage. I try to put more aspen on the bottom because mine loves to burrow. Some snakes like to burrow and others like to climb. Mine never even climbs on his/her log. I have only seen it up there once or twice. I will look into it next time I go to the pet store because all of the ones I have seen in local pet stores (pet barn and bird cage pet shop) are too big for my cage. I don’t get to go to nebraska often which is where the petsmarts and petcos are. Note: Bird Cage Pet Shop has everything from fish to snakes and birds to puppies they carry a variety of stuff but charge a lot for accessories.

You should go to a nearby bush or forest and get some sticks from there. That’s what I did for my first tank, just make sure you clean them very well.

Don’t forget a Thermostat or at least a Rheostat (dimmer switch) to Control the UTH.

Breeding grounds for Bacteria - ditch them!

Also you need Two Identical Hides, one on each end...
and yes the log seems a bit on the Large side :o)

This is fine... as long as the paper is Outside the enclosure, which it appears to be :o)

As far as the branches at petco... they are not cheap, but look nice... and Are Bendable!
I have 4 :o)

You can also order them online, or maybe find some thing similar and or cheaper.

IF you decide to use outdoor branches... they Must be cleaned Thoroughly!!!
They are better breding grounds for bacteria than the fake ones, and the fake ones are easier to clean!

Thanks. I already read the thread. I just need to make a trip into town but unfortunately my mom only has sundays and mondays off so thats when I get to go into town, and my stepdad hates the snake so will refuse to buy anything for it.

looks good to me. you dont have to trash the towel rolls just replace them every week or so. and i personally dont like uth at all but i know a lot of people swear by them. just find something for him to climb on. you can use a stick from outside as long as you bake it at 350 or so for a couple hours.

Thanks. Thats what I was thinking too about the rolls. I like my lamp its just that its getting his/her cage too hot. I doubt that this even counts towards the heat thing but my computer tower is below my snake cage (under the desk anyway) and when I open my desk drawer (also right below the cage) its fairly hot in there. So I doubt that it is actually "heating" the bottom of the cage but just thought I would throw that in. Its kinda odd really.

i disagree with a breeding place for bacteria, i use them all the time... change when they become wet or have feaces on them

what else can you use for a pile of hatchlings!!

Just go find some fallen tree branches, that don’t have sharp edges on them. Wrap it in aluminum foil, set the oven at 250 degrees F, and bake for 20 minutes. That’ll kill any organisms or bacteria living in it. The smell isn’t too pleasing though, but better to be safe with this method.

if you do get some branches from a forest or wood, another method of killing bacteria is putting them in a freezer of night, once you have removed the sharp edges and stuff.

if you do that, let them warm up and let them condense any liquid before putting them in the Viv’.

Thanks for your input Henryandrosey, I didn’t know you could freeze them. That would be easier considering we have a deep freeze and if the stick will stink if baked then my parents won’t approve.
