 Frozen

I know a lot or almost all of you guys feed frozen. And I have made the decision to switch not because of the danger just because of gas prices and how much it’s costing me. Anyway I know nothing about unfreezing rats/mice so any advice would be great. I’ve seen like pinkies for like 39 cents, I think this is a great deal. Is ordering them online fine? BTW have any of you switched from live to frozen and the snakes not like them??
Thanks for all you help!

Well for pinkies they say 10-15 mins in a glass of hot but not boiling water, I use the hottest I can get from my tap, when you touch the mouse (through the plastic bag) you cant feel any cold is about right. Im not totally sure about larger mice. But you could just leave a frozen one in there and take it out every few mins until you cant feel any cold parts. Some people say that you may need to open the skull with a nail its called braining so that the snake can smell it really well. Or wiggling it in front of the snake. (Once again I am in no way an expert so check with others.)

I had no problem switching Hayden. I changed while she was eating large pinkies. I had always fed her by dangling the mouse in the tank by the tail, so I don’t she she even knows yet, after 4 months, that the mice are already dead now.

I breed, kill, and freeze my own feeders for all different types of snakes. The hottest water out of my tap thaws a pink in about 2 minutes, fuzzies are about the same, hoppers take another 2 min, and adults another 2-3 minutes.

Never put a mouse or rat in a plastic bag, as it can suffocate the snake if it gets trapped.

Another tip is, if you squeeze the nose of the mouse until it draws blood; this makes it more inviting to the snake, since i have been doing that i have seen more action out of the snakes in a long time. They strike at it and coil around it.

Hope this helps, Andrew.

First - this does Not warm the prey enough!!!

Second -

Quote:

(had to read this one 3 x - LoL)

I agree... Never put a plastic bad in with a snake (or any other animal)!

You are just askingfor trouble!

* I put the mice (or rats, if you use them) in a cup/bowl of warm water
in the bag they were purchased in
(if you buy bulk - use heavy duty baggies/freezer baggies) till thawed.

Then run the tap water till it gets as hot as it can get and place the mouse in
the hot water till warm to the touch.
Remove From Baggie and offerto the snake.

*If water seeps into the baggie, dry the prey, so that no substrate will stick to it.

*Never microwave the water, as it can be too hot and Cook the prey!

*Never microwave the Prey, as It can Explode! *yucky mess - stinks to high heaven
(I never nuked one personally, but know of some one who did)

dont ever under any circumstance leave the mose in a bag for the snake, unless you are supervising at all times. the snake could sufficate and die a neasty horrible death.

just dangle the mouse or rat infront of the sanke and let them take it.

p.s. heat it up in plastic tub rather than a bag.

For my rats, I use a CO2 chamber, and I will do the same for my mice, but if I’m out of co2, I usually give the mice a quick snap on the edge of a ceramic dish, and it breaks the neck killing them instantly.

First of all i didnt mean let the snake eat the rat or pinkie in the bag! i meant hold it in the bag and let it thaw out!and then feed it to the snake OUT OF THE BAG!and marg,it warms up the pinkies (and fuzzies) for me just fine, and im talking about holding them for a little while.

Ichigo, it may work for you to hold the pinkies or fuzzies in your hand (in the bag), but there is the possibility, and I think this is what Marg is talking about, that they may not be thawed through and through meaning the core of the body is most likely still cold or cold enough that it may, at some point, affect your snake. I would suggest using hot water to thaw any frozen prey because I can guarantee taht you will not be able to thaw a hopper or adult mouse just by holding it in a bag in your hand.
