Looks much better. I’d put the UTH on one of the sides. Good job.

I’d put the UTH underneath the tank under the gray hide box. This way his warm hide is the most secure hide in the tank. I’d replace the half log with another hide like the one to the right. Also, exo terra sells some suction cup plants for the walls. They provide some natural simulation for the snakes and look good too.

Looks pretty good. I would also recommend switching from the half log hide to something more enclosed. You can keep that half log in there, but offer more secure, enclosed hides in addition to the log.

This is not a requirement, but corns will climb on occasion. If you choose to add something your corn can climb on, triple check the security of your lid. Also check the temps at the highest point of the branch or object you will be using. Make sure that it does not get so hot that your snake will receive a contact burn.
I will also concur that a UTH is best place on one side or the other. This allows your snake to self thermoregulate, and choose which temperature he wants. I like to offer a good 10 to 12 degree gradient from cool to warm.
I would check into flex watt heat tape. You can purchase this on line from many different vendors. It is much less expensive than your commercial UTH’s and you can have it cut to length and pre-wired by the company you order it from. I use Reptile Basics for all of my FlexWatt needs. Richard is very helpful and will guide you through the ordering process. He will even make recommendations if you need help or aren’t sure exactly what you need.
Good luck and let us know how everything works out.

Richard works for Reptile Basics :o)
and if it’s the same man I spoke to... yes, very helpful!

If you have Identical Hides (which is recommended),
it doesn’t matter which side you put it on... as long as it is under the hide...
and conveinent for you to get to it, if there is a problem with it!

I use Ultratherm UTHs, that I got from Reptile Basics... Inexpensive - Good Quality!
Quick shipping... I might add, if you order these ...you will need some Foil Duct Tape
(can be found at wal-mart or any hardware store) to attatch it to the enclosure...
they do not come with adheisive like other brands.

You will also Need a Thermostat, or a Rheostat (dimmer switch) to Control the Heat.

Reptile Basics

I have used dimmers:

Quote:

I used them for a while ....they do work...
but you still Need to monitor temps.

These do Not control Temps, only electricity flow to the unit.
If you have Constant temps in the Home (central a/c & heat),
it will work well... I did not have a controlled home temps...
had 200 yr old Deerborn space heaters...
so I was Constantly adjusting.

You plug the unit (UTH or heat lamp [if needed])into the dimmer,
then plug the dimmer into the wall outlet.

Think I paid $9.99 each, at Home Depot.

Quote:

These are not Thermostats!
They do not regulate temps.
Rheostats (Dimmer switch) only cut the electrical flow,
and Still have to be Monitored, and Adjusted,
to room temp fluctuation, and or weather :o)

Quote:

A Dimmer Switch (I have used the slide kind, some use dial)
is plugged into the wall socket, the light/lamp is plugged into the Dimmer switch.

There is usually a red LED Light that gets brighter or Dimmer with adjustment.
The LED Light will get Dimmer, as the more electrical flow is used.
*took me a while to figure this out (I’m Blond)... couldn’t figure out why when
I turned the Dimmer all the way till the light was the brightest,
that the UTH just went cold!
Then I realized it was backwards - duh - LoL

The type I had (don’t know the brand name - sorry) I got from Home Depot,
in the Lamp/electrical dept. Cost me $9.97.

They work, but you still have to Monitor them.
It does Not Control temps, just the flow of electricity to the unit.

I have also heard that the Dimmer may not work on a UTH needing low
temps, as for Corns, but you could try it... at the least you can use it for
any heat lamps being needed, or just for a regular lamp :o)

Quote:

I got my Rheostats (slide Dimmer switches) at Home Depot, think they were $9.97,
in the lighting/electrical dept.
Ask for Dimmer Switches, when I went, only 1 out of 5 people knew what I was after,
cuz this guy had snakes - LoL

A slide Dimmer has an LED Light on it.
When you adjust the electrical flow, the red light will get Dimmer, with a higher setting.
*These Do Not Regulate/Control temps like a Thermostat,
and will still have to be manually monitored/adjusted
      to room/weather changes !!!

Quote:

You can get a good, high quality Digital Stat online ($80 - $300+) from AppleHerps (sp?)
or you can get a cheaper/less expensive "dial type" ($39-$49), at most pet stores...
but they do fluctuate with temps.

A Rheostat costs around $10 at most hardware stores
(Wal-Mart does not have them, for this type of use, one the type you wire into you home system... at least the ones around here - Home Depot is where I got mine [when I Used them])

A Rheostat (Dimmer switch) does Not Control temps... it only controls the flow of
electricity to the unit. It would work, IF you have Constant Room temps.

Thermostats and Rheostats hook up pretty much the same.
You plug the UTH into the outlet On the Stat, then plug it into the wall.

A Thermostat works like the one in your home....
Turns the heat On, when falling below set temps...
Turns it Off when getting higher than set temps....

Currently, I use the dial type, but I have my Home thermostat set at 80f
(whew, yes quite warm in the house - LoL) ...been saving for a digital stat...
I am planning to get a Ranco Stat... is about $79 pre-wired
($58-ish not wired = you have to do the wiring)

Some of these are repeating... I searched for my replies to others asking

Oh and forgot to add....

With a Dimmer Switch You have to be the Thermostat, because like I said... if the room temps change, the dimmer(s) will need to be adjusted.

I would get a branch or two, that is 3 maybe 4 (for grow of the snake) times bigger than the thickness of the snake’s body. And place it in the middle of the tank, something for them to climb on. When they know it is there and have used it a couple of times, they will use it more and more.

Hope this helps, Andrew

 My New Enclosure

The smallest one is 6"x11". and the enclosure looks to be a 20 gal long
(? - I don’t see where you said what Size this new tank is), so yes that one would be fine.

When you place it on the Bottom - Outside of the enclosure, put it on "longways",
so that it runs with the length of the tank... close to the edge, centered like this

You will also need to get Foil Duct Tape, as stated,
and only a few pieces (one on each corner, and one on bothe sides of middle)

*Regular silver will eventually come off - get the Foil type!

Do you have a Thermostat (or Rheostat - dimmer) yet?
