Question About Corns And Similar Pet Snakes

Hi all

I have three corns, that I’ve had for just under a year now, and after a slow feeding start with one of them, they’re all growing and are healthy. I’ve been thinking recently about getting another snake, but I’m looking for going on to something a bit bigger. I think I’m after a python species, something that looks really powerful and has that trademark big trianglular head. I’ve been reading up on ball pythons, as they seem like a good first step, but I wanted to ask anyone with a bit more experience of different species of snake if that is a good idea. I don’t want to get an animal that will get a lot bigger than a corn, and from what I’ve been researching, Ball pythons are of a similar length, and require much of the same requirements as corns. I just wanted to get some other people’s opinions on what a good species of python to begin with is.
Thanks for any comments!

Ball pythons are excellent beginner snakes. You’re absolutely right about the size being similar to corn snakes, and the maintenance isn’t too complicated either (I’d post in the ball python forum for more detailed information).

Question About Corns And Similar Pet Snakes

Hmmm... let’s see.. currently.. I own 2 RTB’s... 10 corns in a variety of colors.. 1 Ball Python that I’ve had for a year.. and ordered 11 baby Balls... I’m not real sure why anyone would think that Balls are great beginner snakes. The fact that you have experience with corns is a plus... but Balls require strict temperature gradients... perfect living conditions... and if they aren’t met... Balls are NOT forgiving... they are not like Burmese.. with a Burmese Python or a Boa.. they forgive us of our shortcomings.. they adapt easily... and thrive.. a Ball will NOT. If you do decide to get a Ball... go over to that forum.. read the thread.."setting up your BP enclosure" get it ready and set up atleast a week in advance... that gives you time to "tweek" your temps and your set up. After you’ve maintained the temps for atleast a week... then you can add your snake... once you add the snake... you leave him alone... no handling... no feeding for atleast a week...except spot cleaning and water changes.. then after 1 week.. you may offer him an appropriately sized prey item. If you’re looking for a snake that likes to hang out around your neck... Balls aren’t really what you’re looking for... some will tolerate it... but most just prefer to be left alone. Most balls are very secretive.. and can stress easily... anyway.. I am in NO WAY trying to discourage you from getting a Ball... they are awesome... and I love mine... but I want you to hear the REAL scoop on Ball Pythons... so many people think they are easy... you can go to the BP forum on any given day... and SOMEONE has a sick BP... anyway let me know what you decide... I really enjoy my BP’s just make sure you do your research... and make sure your set up is perfect.
Susan

i don’t think anything MADE your snake want to..as you say... attack you...just remember.. it IS a snake. We as humans don’t want to be bothered at times so my guess is that they have moments where they don’t want to be messed with either. as for picking up your snake the day after you fed it... i really don’t advise that... you’re going to end up with a regurgitating snake. It’s best to leave them alone for at least 48 hours. That being said... I bet if you try to pick it up again.. it’ll be fine.. and most of the time... once they are out of their enclosure.. they are fine anyway. Anyway..good luck and let us know what happens

Question About Corns And Similar Pet Snakes

Ball Pythons (in my experience) are NOT a beginner snake! They are an intermediate snake at best. And this is not because of it’s "attitude"...but more because of it’s husbandry requirements.

Another snake that I would also consider an intermediate snake is a Brazilian Rainbow Boa (BRB). The reason for this is because of their very, very high humidity requirements.

However...If you can set up a "Tub" (Not a tank) properly...The humidity will not be an issue at all. And I will help you with that if you would like.

The reason I think a BRB would be a better choice for you is this...

  • The BRB male only gets about 5 - 5.5 feet long and slightly smaller around than a Red Bull can.

  • They are not picky eaters.

  • They have the same temp requirements as Corn Snakes (which you already know).

Ok, first I’d like to address something I see more of lately on the forums in general...

What you have done here is known as "hijacking" a thread.
If you have a related question or input to a particular thread, that’s one thing...but to post a reply in someone else’s thread that is completely unrelated is poor forum etiquette. Post your own thread if you have a question. You will get a better response from people this way, since they came into your thread to address YOUR question, you are going to get more information specific to your particular problem.
As far as a ball python being a good beginner snake...yes and no. As Scylla stated, they are among the more docile of snake species available in the reptile trade industry today. But their husbandry is a little more specific than corns. They also have a tendency to fast, or just quit eating. Sometimes for months on end. This can be very stressful to the keeper, and may lead to other problems as well.
Most of your colubrids are good choices for a new snake. But all snakes have their quirks.

Question About Corns And Similar Pet Snakes

I’ve run into your situation myself. I’ve been keeping corns for almost 2.5 years. I’ve only got a large male and a small female, and managed to get myself a leopard gecko in there as well, but I feel I am ready to tackle a new species. I try to only add one a year because of space, money and the time it takes to properly research a new snake or lizard species, so you could say that I am an infant in the herp world, but I am smart and cautious when it comes to me being in direct control over another beings entire universe. I like to be prepared.

You said you were looking for a boid species and this is where our paths differ a bit for I am way more interested in the various Colubrid species then the boids, since I find the Colubrids to be a lot more attaractive and easy to care for, for various reasons, and for my next snake I am seriously considering a Honduran or Pueblan Milk snake. They seem like such hardy snakes and are quite gorgeous too. Because space is an issue with me right now, (I’ll be 18 in 9 days so I’ll be moving out soon) I am seriously leaning towards the pueblan milk just because their adult size is perfect for the space and tanks I have available, I dont’ believe they get over 4 feet, at least in the males and a 20 gallon is fairly good for a small species like that.

For you I would recomend the Honduran Milk though, since you are trying to go bigger than a corn.
The female hondurans are much larger than the males (Girl power!^_^v), and i believe 7 and even 8 feet in some cases can be reached fairly easily for them after a few good years of regular feedings, and proper husbandry, or at least that is what I’m told.
They also look quite tropical and more striking than corns, since they are banded in beautiful contrasting colors. On the plus side their care is similair to a corns and they tolorate handling just as well. So if the boid thing doesn’t work out, or perhaps you are interested in adding more than one species to your collection, I would definitely consider a milk snake!

That is BEAUTIFUL! OMG! I want one of those so badly now! I think I need to re-evaluate my appreciation of the boids because that is one fine looking girl/guy you have there. If they don’t get to huge I may have to put my milk snake on hold for another year...

    That one is Charybdis!

She is aptly named because she tends to hang out in her water bowl when she’s hungray and when she strikes the Rats...she’s pulls them in and drowns them while constricting them!!

Quite the deadly little wench isn’t she!

But outside of feeding...She’s a sweetheart!
