 Corn Snake Future Projects

I was fortunate last week and came across a woman that was moving back to texas and needed to rehome some of her snakes. I bought 8 of them. I already had 1 and my 12 year old caught a normal on his first field herping trip last weekend. My question is this... now that i have them.. and I live in a somewhat small community where people can’t really get the different colors...I’ve had quite a few people offer to buy them from me. My problem is.. I am having a tough time deciding what to keep for future projects and what I would like to rehome (might as well get my money back... right?) Below is a list of what i have... all ideas and opinions are welcome.

0.1.0 reverse okeetee
0.0.1 wild caught normal (son’s)
1.1.0 Abbott’s line Okeetee (from South Mountain reptiles)
1.0.0 Caramel
1.0.0 Ultramel,(het Caramel)
1.0.0 Normal/Classic.. multi het...with partial aztec/zig zag pattern (whatever the hell that means)
0.1.0 Amber
0.1.0 Rootbeer
0.1.0 Anery Motley

Ok so there’s my list of corns... people are really asking me daily to sell... but I don’t want to sell something that would make a great breeding project in the future. Thanks in advance for all of your advice.

Susan

The ultramel anerys are cool looking so I would keep the ultramel and anery motley pair.

My absolute favorite is the Ultramel... I named him Whiskey and the Amber is named Luna... but no one else has a name yet. The Anery Motley is CRAZY beautiful and she doesn’t have a name yet... The classic is my best friends favorite... he says it reminds him of a polished hard wood floor... I want to keep them all... but I know that’s silly. especially with people offereing to buy them... I’m telling you... they are beautiful. I have to say that my least fav is the RootBeer. The thing is... I ordered 11 Captive hatched Baby balls and I feel like they will require a lot of my time. and I am really wierd about any of my animals going lacking... my best friend will help me.. but I’ve only been keeping snakes for less than a year and I don’t want to "bite off more than I can chew" so to speak.

Wisema... is that all you’d keep? Did you have certain breeding pairs in mind?

I would breed something to the amber female. Have you seen the amber stripes yet? They are amazing but have a HUGE price tag for now!!! I’d look into purchasing some sort of cheap priced striped male to breed to her, after selling off any others, to create het amber stripes (maybe a ghost stripe to keep the hypo theme going since both ambers and ghosts are hypo).

Or I would purchase an amel stripe male to breed to the amber. That way all of the babies would be het for amber stripe, butter stripe and caramel stripe. That would be a killer clutch and would very easily pay for itself 10 times over!! I know the last thing you wanted to hear was to buy another one but the amber gene and the striped gene combine for a really awesome animal. Plus just cimbining the stripe gene into your babies make the clutches that much more fun when it’s time to hatch.

Gold dust = ultramel and caramel. You’d get this by breeding them together and then breeding the babies together.

Hey Susan! Congrats on all those corns ;) I would definitely be keeping all of those for breeding projects. I still have a lot to learn on corn genetics myself, so I really can’t help you there, but that’s awesome that you got that many!

Thanks Candy! They kinda just "fell in my lap" so to speak... I’m really not sure that I like the RootBeer... I don’t care for dark colored snakes. So... you’d keep them all? Are you serious? I want to... I really do... but I also have 11 baby Balls being delivered Thursday... and I want to make sure that I don’t bite off more than I can chew. On Thursday... my snake count will be as follows:
2 RTB
10 corns
12 BP’s
I fed everyone last night, and it took me FOREVER.. and the lil BP’s aren’t even here yet lol but I am like soooooooo freaking excited. I finished my neonate rack and will add the heat tape (or whatever hubby decides to use) today so I’ll have til Thursday to "tweek" my temps.
You know how I’m always terrified of getting bitten? Well, it was India’s turn to eat last night... and I feed everyone with a partner (I feed live) Last night, my best friend was there helping me and my12 year old was handling the rats (they love him) We feed in their enclosure... the Boa came up and out of her enclosure... tagged my best friend and it literally looked like she was trying to pull him down in her enclosure... I swear, I’ve seen less blood when women were giving birth lol
Anyway... I guess I’m going to rethink selling any of them. Wisema even suggested that I get a striped.... so anyway... I’m still open to suggestions

OK OK I’ll buy the book... can I get it on line? BTW thanks for the genetics lesson yesterday... you have me SO hyped! I’m working on getting hubby to OK pics for you (even if I have to send them only to you..at least you can say.. yeppers the girlie has them and they are as beautiful as she says) I took some notes yesterday during our conversation.. and I am very excited. I guess my next step will be... #1 tweaking my temps and getting ready for all my baby Balls... get them all wormed and settled and hopefully eating... once I get them under control... then I can start adding to my collection. My husband and my best friend say they have created a monster. Anyway... thanks Chuck!

Everyone else... I’m still VERY open to suggestions. and Thanks to you in advance!

i gotta ask
if you have all those nice snakes , why are you keeping the wild one? why not let it go? you`ll have all you need if your gonna breed them?
let the few wild ones left out there live.
you really don`t want to put it with the captives anyway, it might have parasites.

Once they have been captive for a time and have acclimated to captivity you can not release them "back into the wild". This is more for the wild populations sake than the snake itself. Once introduced into captivity the snake very likely becomes exposed to different microbs and pathogens that do not naturally occur in their natural range. Re-introducing them into the wild exposes ALL the snakes to this and can be devastating. This is what happened to a species of tortoise in California. Well intentioned individuals released captive breds and in so doing introduced disease that the wild specimens could not cope with even though it had no effect on the captive ones. This species of tortoise was almost totally wiped out!!

Corns are VERY plentiful. They are in no danger what so ever of disapearing. They are a very secretive snake and as such are hard to find and not seen much but if you know where to look you can find them pretty much 7-8 months out of the year.

If I had to choose bewteen having to give up my morphs or my wild caught.............I’d choose to keep the wild caught every time!! They are the real deal, have the genes for survival and are the most beautiful out there...of course this is just my opinion.

Number 1... this is my only wild caught and he is NO WHERE near my collection. Number 2... my 12 year old little boy caught it on his first ever field herping trip... so not only does it mark in my heart the fact that I have instilled my love for snakes in him... it’s special to him as his first snake that his mommy didn’t pay for... ya know what I mean? I know all of you field herpers will understand. Plus.. he’s only 12. Number 3... I agree with Wisema... this snake is the real deal... it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL.. it is so muscular... just a wonderful example of the species. Not to mention... I live in SC...where corn snakes are like ants... they are everywhere. please don’t be offended and think that I’m depleting the corn population in SC... that would be impossible. My best friend got popped by one yesterday at work... trust me.. they are plentiful. as far as pics... Kojak and scylla have seen them... b/c I had to send them email... even the smallest thumbnail I can get them will not upload... I realize I sit infront of a computer all day... but if any of you would like to try your hand at it and help me post them.. I’ll be glad to email them to you... BTW... the 11 new captive hatched ball Pythons will be here a day early.. (tomorrow) I got a confirmation email this morning.

Susan, Have you tried photobucket.com yet? I post all my pics from there. Since I am on 3 different reptiles forums it keeps me from having to save pics on every site. Here is link to my photobucket site, Link I do not care if anyone here sees what is on it so feel free to browse threw the "my snakes" folder. To post one of these pics here just find the pic you want and place your cursor over the IMG code box, highlight it (usually just click once on it will give you the "copied" message). Then just right click in your message where you want it to go and and choose paste. This will become the picture after you hit preview message. Try it with one of my pics in a message.

hey guys . i wasn`t trying to come down on anyone . you say they`re that common up ther , thats great .in miami , they are aboutnon existent now . in the city , you`ll find only black racers . they have all been caught up to sell.
my son and i go to the everglades ,abe twice a week . we`ve seen cornsnakes maybe half those times.
i just hate to see them depleted just because they are beautiful . we find them photograph them

and no matter how pretty we let them be.
i`ll respect your view . just respect mine. i wasn`t wrong.

Chuck! You are so sweet... thank you! Perry (hubby) reset the camera so that the thumbnails are smaller on download... so when I UPload they will fit. You can also see my BP named Seis.. and both of my Boas (India and Gandhi) along with all of these in the thread I started yesterday. Again Chuck... thank you..and as usual..great snake... beautiful little girl P>S> I’m getting ready to post pics of all my lil CH BP’s.

As for depleting the corn snake population... I would never say your opinions are wrong.. or doubt the fact that they are being depleted in your state. I am so glad that you are aware of the situation enough to catch them..photograph them and then release them. That is a very honorable thing to do... and a great lesson to teach your child. Anytime you wanna catch some that you can keep... just come on up to South Carolina and go herping... LOL but as my 12 year old says... "ya might wanna be careful... they don’t really wanna be caught."
