 Normal mouth color?

Hey. The last few times I’ve fed Whisper I’ve noticed the inside of her mouth is a bit magenta-colored, almost purple, and I’m a bit nervous she might have mouth rot. If someone who has a pic of their snake opening their mouth could post it so I could check if the color is normal, or if you guys know that this is weird and it should be red or something and could let me know, that’d be great.

Sorry I don’t have a picture--but mouth rot has other symptoms. The first garter snake I purchased had mouth rot which I couldn’t tell from just the short time I had with it in the petshop, but within the hour of bringing it home I noticed it and returned it. It’s mouth around the lips would be swollen, so that you can see the lining of the mouth which is normally hidden with the mouth is closed. It won’t eat, even though it will actually be interested in the food. It’s not because it isn’t hungry but because it hurts for it to eat. It’ll also secrete bubbles or saliva from it’s mouth when it’s closed, it’s most noticable if there are bubbles while it’s flicking its tongue out. Other signs are the snake rubbing it’s face, particularly its mouth on rough objects to relieve the itch.

It’s best to bring it to a herp vet who can diagnose it and give you antibiotics. The above signs are normally when it’s in a really advanced state. If you suspect it, I would bring all your snakes to the vet (if you have others) because it is extremely contagious.

This can come from bad husbandry--dirty water, foul living conditions. Or it could be because, if you’re feeding live the prey struggled and broke the snake’s teeth or if you pulled the snake off roughly after it bit you or someone else.

That’s really all I know about this topic. I’m sure someone with more experience will come along and be able to offer more advice.

...that is... so horrifying. I don’t know how it’s possible someone let their snake’s mouth rot get to that point.

But it’s a good picture none-the-less.

Yeah, that’s really awful. Thanks for the pics; I’m pretty sure she’s healthy - I’ll check again during feeding next week and get her to a vet if I still suspect anything

Is it an adult male?

I hear sexually mature males go off their food and rub their heads against things during spring because it’s mating season.

If the husbandry and all that other stuff is okay, it probably isn’t anything.

Oh, I also forgot to mention, you will be able to notice blood on the gums and stuff if it is mouth rot.
