 Question about Shedding and Mice....

Hey guys,

About a couple of months I got this guy. He is five years old and absolutey Gorgeous. He was quite mean and I had to do some work with him, but is a totally sweet boy now.

He hasn’t wanted to eat in about three weeks. About a week ago I noticed he was shedding, so I figured that is why he wasn’t eating. His coloring was very dull, which is normal. Yesterday morning he was totally bright, but I did not see the skin in his tank. I figured maybe he was done, maybe he ate it, maybe he just wasn’t gonna shed.
I tried to feed him last night and he refused again. Worried, but after letting him hang out for a while, I placed him back in his enclosure and I headed for bed. Early this morning there was the shed skin.

Do they always do this?

Mice -- He has been fed f/t all his life. Once I unthaw and warm up the rat/mouse, if he doesn’t eat it, can I keep it in the fridge for a few more days, or should I just toss it?

Why should the mouse not be wet? Will this harm my guys?

Thank you all,

Edel

And my little guy - Butter Corn het for Motley-One year old:

 Question about Shedding and Mice....

My snake has done that a couple of times, milky blue eyes, about to shed, the next morning his all bright, I honestly don’t have a clue.

If the snake was fed live mice all its life, I think it’d be a good idea to go out and bye a couple breeder mice, if not there is a couple ways you could try getting it too eat a f/t mouse;
1. The "Happy Dance"; you simply take tongs, pinch its tail (the mouses) and make it look like its running around in front of the snake, hopefully it’ll go after the mouse.
2. Braining, kinda gross but its known too work, you slit the top of the mouse’s head open, and smear its blood and brains over the mouses body, this may or may not stimulate the snake into "predator" mode.

and yes, you can pop the mouse back in the freezer/fridge/ice box after you had heated it up, after all that’s what the do when there alive, gas em, or just throw em in a bag and put them in the freezer,
hope I helped,

-Nate

 Question about Shedding and Mice....

I honestly have no clue how many times,
I usually just refreeze for bout’ 5 days, then toss it, LOL.
But don’t try freezing them when you brain them of course LOL.
I’d honestly just wait tomorrow, I’d say try feeding him late afternoon if possible.

 Question about Shedding and Mice....

what happens is when snakes shed you get the milky blue eyes and a few days later it goes away.

Even though it goes away and the snake looks "normal" its still in shed. and a few days later it sheds its
skin.

some corn snakes are so greedy they will eat during shed some wont. yours wouldnt.

So you just have to wait until after it shedded completely and it will eat.

As for the mouse that you wanted to use, did you leave it out over the days?

if you left out since the first time you tried to feed the snake I would just throw it away and use a different one.

Ihavent had a corn snake in the longest time but i think i may get one or two more these snakes are so addictive lol.

 Question about Shedding and Mice....

when a snake sheds a fluid goes inbetween the new and old skin giving them the blue eyes and dull color about a day before shed it leaves and they brighten up again

 Question about Shedding and Mice....

My personal rule for f/t mice that don’t get eaten, is that if it has been out for less than 1 hr, I will refreeze it. If the next time I thaw it, it doesn’t get eaten, I toss it. Some snakes like that stronger smell from a mouse that has been thawed and refrozen.

 Question about Shedding and Mice....

Thanks Guys,

That really helps.

My stupid pet store person. He told me my guy could really eat the medium rats. So he tried, but could not. I thought the rule on this was that he could eat something one time and a half bigger than the thickest part of his body. But their heads are smaller, and through doing some research, if a snake can only release the jaws and open three times bigger than it’s head, then it really can’t eat something that is a lot bigger than that.

Why are their heads smaller like that? Do they grow with age?
