Well, what are you looking for? What size tank can you handle? Do you want a fast, active snake, or a slow snake? Is this your first snake?
Most people are going to tell you to get a ball python, or a corn snake. I like to get a feel for what you want first.

i want a good tempered snake. one that doesnt need a huge tank. i live in an apartment, so i have to fit it all in my room. about a 10-20 gallon tank. a good handler snake. yes, this will be my first snake. i was thinking maybe a corn snake.

Well, for first snakes I’d say a corn, ball, or sand boa. Just research whatever piques your interest and you’ll be able to find your perfect snake that way. Sand boas and ball pythons are more mellow while corn snakes can be pretty nippy and fast(as babies). The max tank size needed for an adult ball python is a 30 gallon. I like keeping adult corn snakes in 40 gallon breeders since they like to explore a lot. Anyway, just look up care sheets and I’m sure you’ll be happy with whatever choice you make. Good luck!

If you’re wanting a small, mellow snake I’d suggest going with a rosy boa or a sand boa. Both have adult sizes half or less than half that of a corn. (Rosies and sand boas averaging at about 3’, some less, and corns reaching about 5-6’) Personally, I wouldn’t keep an adult corn in anything smaller than a 40 gallon either, and I prefer to go larger.

Corns are great snakes, I love mine, but if you can’t fit anything larger than a 20 gallon in your room I’d suggest looking at either a rosy or a sand boa. I’m sure there are plenty of other small, mellow snakes out there, too, so like Repfanatic says, just do some looking and see what you can find. I’m sure you’ll be able to find the perfect snake for you.

From what I can find on the internet it say that sand boas run about $75-100 and I think rosies can go for about $125. I’m not sure, because I didn’t pay much attention to either of those snakes at my pet store. You’ll just have to do some looking and see what you can find. You might be able to find a breeder online and probably save some that way.

I don’t think so... They had both at my pet store. I don’t really know much about them except that they stay small and they’re pretty good tempered.

I’m in the same boat as well. I’m trying to decide between a ball or a corn.

I like Corns because they are colourful and love to move about.

I like ball pythons because they generally are slower and don’t zip about as much.

So corns can’t live in a 20 gallon for the whole lives?

i’d be fine with the rodents as i have water dragons that eat rodents.

Im just looking more at the pythons since they seem to be more lazy... I really don’t want escapees as i used to have a garter snake that just kept escaping. It was a complete nightmare.

sorry if this is a hijack, i just thought maybe since we had the same problem I’d ask a few more q’s

Some say they can. But considering that an adult corn will most likely be twice the length of (maybe longer) a 20 gallon tank, I hardly see how that’s a fit housing arrangement for life. I wouldn’t put an adult in anything smaller than a 40 gallon long or other floor space equivalent cage.

thanks as i’ve been reading up some caresheets and they say that they can live comfortably in a 20.

I trust your opinions much more though. =)

I also ran into this caresheet that went ahead and said that corns grow at a rate depending on how its fed. WTf?
it sounds so... i don’t know silly.

They’re talking about power feeding. My ghost corn was power fed and is now nearly adult size as a yearling. She/he was being fed 2 adult mice once a week. This shortens their life span considerably. They don’t get any larger than what they should be (probably fatter), but they still grow considerably quicker than a corn snake fed an appropriately sized meal once a week. Here’s my "yearling" that was power fed.

Here’s my yearling amel that’s on large fuzzies once a week.

I don’t know it was like the opposite of powerfeeding.

It said that a corn snake’s size can be determined by how much you feed. That way you can keep the corn snake smaller longer. Rather than powerfeeding to get large faster. =S

also the females are the ones that get the biggest right?

what is the average length they grow to. Alot of mixed opinions from 3-6 feet. just thought i’d like to get more of an overview and more info.

Well, underfeeding is no good either. Any time you’re messing with an animal’s natural growth you can expect negative consequences.

There isn’t a big size difference between the genders, but the males tend to end up a bit larger.

The average length is probably about 5 feet, but it can range from 4-6’.

I am a new snake owner and debated the question. I bought my corn snake, Cecil in early July. He is just beautiful, he is handleable but very fast moving since he is a baby and not easy to sit on the couch and watch tv with since he is constantly moving. 3 wks ago I rescued a pair of abandoned ball pythons. Also beautiful and very easy to handle. So enjoy whatever you get.

If you get a corn, it would be wise to get a tank with a locking lid, since they are escape artists. if they can fit their big heads through, they are gone. lol I caught my Hypomel in the act once. he was sticking out about 3 inches or so from a hole the size of a dime from where the lid wasnt shut tight. : / sneaky snakes. I love corns though, they are active, come in any colors, and have very very different personalities. BPs tend to be easier to hold, and love to squeeze your hand when held(they are constricters)

Corns are also constrictors if memory serves.

Ive grown up with BCI most of my life. This summer I babysat corns snakes, and now am keeping one I hatched. ( they laid eggs the first week I was watching them) So now Ive been researching them more.

Corns come in a wide variety of colors, but they can get quite large. A 20 Gal long could hold one... but as was mentioned, they can get 6’ long and love to explore. I agree that they need at least a 40 gal tank with lots of hides and places they can explore to keep them active and enrich their environment.

Ive not owned a ball python. They are quite popular though, and generally easy keepers if you keep their humidity and temps right. Ive heard that they can be finiky eaters when they have changes to their environment, but that otherwise they are even tempered and slower moving (except when grabbing their meal, they have a pretty fast strike) and with care and handling some even seem to enjoy being handled.

Corns are great escape artists (part of their curious nature) so yeah, make sure you have a lid that snaps shut or locks, and even during a water change...make sure its closed fully or your houdini will go zipping around your house. They are fast suckers! *laughs*

Corn snakes are colubrids. Out of the 4 semi-adults I have only one likes to wrap around my wrist and hang out. The rest like to wander.

Summary: Corn snakes will usually feed on small lizards and small mice, and they are constrictors, meaning that they will suffocate their prey before feeding.

I did not mean species, I meant in the way they kill their food.
I got that from a Video on how to feed your cornsnakes as I googled it just now to be certain I was not posting misinformation. They are...in fact colubrids as a species, you are correct. But they are also constrictors in their feeding habit.

Yup, they’re constrictors by way of feeding habits. (Although some do choose to just eat without constricting) One of mine also enjoys wrapping around my hand/arm/anywhere else, like it’s a branch, while the other likes to try his best to get away and go back into his tank. Just depends on the snake.
