Hey all. I’ve been doing some homework for a couple of weeks now. Planning on getting a Corn in the next month or so. I just browsed the enclosures forum, but mostly beardies and other lizards on there and such. If you could be so kind as to post pix of your enclosures, as well as how you’re heating them (what bulbs/UTH you use), as well as enclosure size. I’d love to build my own, but maybe I’ll just grab a 30 gal aquarium on craigslist and call it a day??
I own an African Fat Tailed gecko, almost 5 years now, so I know all about thermoregulation and proper humidity levels and hides and all, I just would like a little guidance from actual owners of these beautiful Corns!!

Hey! Glad to hear you’ve been doing your homework!

Here is my creamsicle, Jack’s tank. It’s a 67 gallon home-made tank, 4’x18"x18".

I went crazy with it and bought a bunch of fake plants and found some great branches in the woods. (Bleached, aired out, and checked for sharp edges before use)

I use a heat lamp with it, but only because the bottom of the tank has a wooden base under the glass and I can’t attach a UTH to it. I use a 75 watt blue bulb on a dimmer, but you could probably get away with a 50 watt, I just haven’t tried. I use a blue bulb because it’s less disturbing while trying to sleep. (For me)

It does heat up the entire room quite a bit if you’re not careful, and I wouldn’t suggest using a heat lamp on a smaller sized tank because it dries the air out and can heat the whole tank so there is no cool side. But hey, some people prefer lamps. If you can get them to work well, great. I’m just a UTH person.

This is my bloodred, Marvin’s tank. It’s a 40 gallon long, and I use a UTH with it. I also put fake plants and branches in it.

The snakes love their branches!

Of course, this is kind of going overboard. I’m guessing you’d probably be getting a juvenile corn, and if that’s the case, a 10 or 20 gallon is best to start in. It’s easier to fill with hides and keep them feeling secure. My guys are nearing on 4’ now, though, so they’ve long since outgrown their 10 gallons.

Hope this was helpful!

Hey, thanks for the reply ETM! That’s everything I was wondering, and just what I thought about the heating. I too like UTHs, but there’s waaay too much involved if you build your own wooden enclosure! I was in the cages/enclosures forum last night and stumbled upon this Link . Absolutely free plans to build a sweeet enclosure. They made it for a beardie, but it will work for nearly any reptile, especially snakes! Their dimensions are 4’ X 2’ X 18" high. I’m tweaking the dimensions to 3’ X 18" X 18", which is plenty big. I see yours is 4’ long, but do you thing 3" will suffice an adult?
By the way, your creamsicle is gorgeous! Not sure what I’ll get, as far as morph and age. I don’t want to order online, and there’s limited shops around me (Massachusetts), maybe like 4 or so. If you know a reputable dealer, let me know though...

Check out my AFT... Link

That’s a really cool looking cage! I didn’t build mine. I was lucky enough to find it at a yard sale... For $50, heat lamps, water bowls, and hides included! I guess it was my lucky day.

Well, the size of the enclosure depends on how much you’re willing to pay and how much you think is necessary for your snake. Personally, I will be looking for something even bigger for my snakes as they continue to grow. (Adult size is about 5-6’) I like them to have plenty of space to stretch out in. But 3’x18"x18" is bigger than a 30 gallon tank, and most people use tanks about that size, or smaller. So yes, 3’x18"x18" should be alright.

I got my snakes from Kathy Love from cornutopia.com I would highly recommend ordering from her. My snakes were active, healthy, and gave me no problems feeding. She’s also very helpful and pleasant to do business with. Here are my guys 3 years later:
Bloodred

Creamsicle

Great snakes, I love ’em. :)

And since the spider forum is dead... Check out my A. seemanni. :)
