 Burmating

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to brumate 2 snakes? I have seen it done on a large scale, where the entire room is cooled down, but I am not entirely sure on how to do it for just 2 snakes.

Any advice would be great!

Thank you
Helen

The easiest way is to shorten the amount of time the lights are on. After a month or so turn off all lights for 3-4 months.
You can also turn of all heating for a month or two. then slowly turn things on again. Do not feed during this time.

step by step guide, this is how i did it last year.

October--Turn lights off 30 mins earlier each week.
November--Have light on for 2-3 hours a day.
Mid November--Turn lights of completely.
December--turn off heating.
January--Leave everything off
Febuary--Turn on heating
Mid Febuary--Turn on lights for 2-3 hours aday
March--Lengthen the amount of time light are on by 30 mins each week
Mid March--Carry on as normal, start feeding your snakes.

This is only basic, other people have different ways. not all people do it with there snakes.

Hope this helped!!

Thanks,
I thought that they actually had to be cooled off, not just lights. I have been in snake houses where they are in the dark, but they are also cooled to 55 or 60 degrees! And I will tell you one thing, that was my favorite place to escape to for at least a couple of minutes at a time because the rest of the snake house was between 85 and 90 degrees! Not to bad in the winter, but in full blown summer! It was so stuffy.

Thanks again for the advice, I will give it a try.

As for cooling 2 snakes without cooling a whole room, you could try a closet. You can also monitor the amount of light that way as long as you have a light source for the closet.

Ive also seen wide storage shelves that are boxed in with wood- like a china cabinet sort of- used in this way for a small collection. It was actually to keep them warm with UTH in their rubbermaid bins, but would work for brumating as well if you covered the glass doors and turned down the heat.

When snakes are brumating, are you allowed to get them out of their tanks? Or do you at least check on them every now and then? I would be worried about mine if they were cooped up in the closet for a couple months. Probably just because I’ve never done it before. :)

No, you don’t handle them while they are brumating, but you do check on them from time to time to make sure that they have water, but they need to be left alone.

Working at the breeders that is what we did, on a huge scale mind you. I just wasn’t really sure how to do with with just 2 snakes :)
