I feel stupid... and really lucky

So last night I had my corn snake out and was handling her, like normal. Then I put her back in her tank and took out her dish to change her water. When I finished that, I came back and put the dish back in her tank. Then I went to bed. This morning when I got up, I nearly had a heart attack. THE LID TO HER CAGE WAS HALF OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a sliding lid that’s connected to the top of the tank, and it was half open!!!!!!!!!!! I knew that was it, she was gone. Then, as I was staring at the lid, I saw something move in the tank. It was my snake! I was so amazed that she was still there! I don’t know if she didn’t even notice the lid was open or what. Either way, I still have my beautiful, wonderful, gift-from-God corn snake!! I feel really stupid for not putting the lid back on after changing her water, but I don’t feel as stupid as I feel lucky. Has anyone ever had anything like that happen before? Could she really not have noticed, all night long, that her lid was open? I don’t know, but I’m really happy she’s still with me!

I had just gotten 3 new baby corn, and my cousins wanted to hold them. Sure I said. When they were done they put them back in the tank, BUT DIDN"T PUT THE LID BACK ON! Needless to say, I only found 2 of them.. I don’t know what happend to the 3rd. I was very upset!!!

I have a post below about my experience with that.
I did find the snake in less than 24 hours...but SCAARRRY- and it was during a water change too.
I will always, ALWAYS recover my tank, even for the two minutes it takes to walk to the other side of my counter across the kitchen and wash out the dish.

I did that once. I’d opened the sliding lid to get Apophis some water. Like an idiot, I left the lid open when I was done and went about my business. About half an hour later, it hit me that I’d forgot to put the lid back on, so I ran in to check on him. He was curled up happily in his hide, sleeping like a baby. lol. Ever since that time, I make sure I put the lid on every single time I open it. Glad you were just as lucky and that your baby was there. :)

I have a 5.5ft gray ratsnake that got loose from a slide lid tank a few months ago. I have a whole little second house on my property that’s my "animal house" and a loose rat chewed a hole in the bottom of the exterior door so now the ratsnake comes and goes,I see her every couple of days either going in or coming out of that hole but she darts under the house before I can get her every time.

Lol,this ratsnake is a pain. She goes in my reptilehouse at night and knocks everything on my shelves over, goes to the bathroom on top of cages and then apparently leaves in the morning. I’ll catch her butt eventually

I’m workin on setting up a trap now but I gotta find something that she will trip and not be able to get out of. I’ve stayed out there a few times hoping she’d come on in but no luck,of course the next morning all my stuff was knocked around again:)

Perhaps a large F/T prey item inside a sturdy box with a hole cut the same size she is at her widest point. (and even a dish of water in there, with a hide)

When she eats...she will be larger around...and thus...get stuck trying to escape. You can then cut or tear the box to get her out. I’d wear leather gloves cause she will probably be pretty ticked! Oh and if you can line the opening, hot glue or glue down some cloth around the hole...cause cardboard can cut if she struggles too much. A human type heating pad under half the box wouldn’t go amiss so she can seek out warmth- especially as the weather cools. Or putting it on top of one of those cages she deficates on. They are probably warm on top, so she goes there, gets warm, then dashes off when she hears you commin!

Good luck!

I think I may try that tomorrow night, its been chilly at night lately so she’s been in there messing things up even more,my shelves were pretty well dumped on the floor this morning. I have some cricket boxes that would be perfect for that and I’m sure I have a heat pad around here somewhere. Thanks for the advise I’ve tried a few things but she’s over 5ft so she pretty well moves anything she gets trapped under. And yes,she will be PO’d,she already has a nasty attitude but she’s so pretty and an awesome breeder,I got 32 eggs out of her last season.

Well no luck yet with the box trap but its been colder the last few nights and nothings been knocked off the shelves so she may not have even been in there, but its supposed to warm up so I’m sure she’ll be popping in so I’m gonna keep trying.
