Baby gray rat snake feeding question Ok, I have a gray rat snake that hatched out on 8-18-09 and has yet to shed or eat. I bred corns and rats on a small scale years ago and haven’t quite encountered this yet,I’ve had non eaters but not this long and if I remember right they all shed within a few weeks of hatching out. I have tried scenting, washing, and paper bag feeding but nothing has sparked its interest. Any suggestions on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated as I am pretty much just repeatedly going through these steps until I have some luck. Thanks

Baby gray rat snake feeding question What have you sented with?
lizards work great
Have you tried both live and f/t pinks?
maybe you could try an actual lizard.
You can even wash live pinks too.
Let me know.

Baby gray rat snake feeding question I’ve tried both f/t and live pinkies, scented with lizards and chicken broth,I haven’t washed live yet though. I am going to put it back in a paper bag tomorrow night with a live so I’ll try it. I have tried anoles and mediterranean geckos with no luck. I have also tried crickets and leopard slugs cause. He/she is still very active but is beginning to drop weight seemingly quick,I had incubatior failure and out of 32 rat snake eggs,18 or so beardie eggs, and 6 basilisk eggs this was my only survivor,so I hate to lose it after surviving all that even though I don’t think its quite to the point of losing it yet.

Baby gray rat snake feeding question Washing live is the one that worked for the one that had not eaten from the brood I had. Ive got a washed F/T pinkie in there now. Tried on Tuesday and it didnt eat. took it out, waited a day and am trying another F/T today. We will see if it takes it, if not, Ill try live again next Tuesday.
The other three ate well, one within ten minutes of putting food in the enclosure!

Baby gray rat snake feeding question Awesome,I’ll definitely try washing a live one tomorrow night. I have two baby carpet python crosses I have to put in a paper bag tomorrow as well so I’ll wash for all three and hope for the best. I really want this guy/gal to eat since its my sole survivor from the incubation issues,I named it lucky.

Baby gray rat snake feeding question Good news,I cleared one big hurdle getting it to eat. It ate two mediterranean geckos overnight:). So thanks for all the help,I will be scenting pinkies with them once a week to try and entice it but can pretty much keep a descent supply of them coming in until it decides to take the pinkies.

Baby gray rat snake feeding question Thanks,me too! Now I just have to catch as many as I can in case the cold weather moving in puts them into hibernation. It didn’t last year since it really didn’t stay cold long enough. I’m gonna try again tonight and see if it will take another,he/she has some skin loosening so it’d be nice to plump it up quickly.
