You said he was 4 feet long, if I remember correctly, and if that’s the case he should only be eating every 7-10 days as it is. Why exactly are you feeding him rat pups? He looks like he should be on adult mice.

 Wont eat

Often times when a snake changes homes, they get a little stressed.

If you have been handling it a lot, and it has not had a full week of being allowed to acclimate to its new surroundings undisturbed, it is not uncommon for them to not eat.

I recommend that you not handle it for a week. Try a rat pup at the end of that time, a small one, as that is what it is used to eating. ( I would have said Large mouse too, but since the previous owner already has it on rat pups with no issues, continuing with the same prey item is fine) Then do not handle it at all for at least 48 hours after feeding. Once its clear its digested its meal, then you can go back to handling. If it keeps down a rat pup and has not had issues with regurgitation in the past, you can keep it on them- I would just move to every 10 days for feeding to be sure it does not become over weight.

Even Every Week Sounds Like a Lot . . .

That’s an adult snake, and if it were me, I’d try to wean it over to adult mice and maybe feed it 1-2 perhaps every two weeks (adult mice probably offer a slightly better "balanced" diet because of the food they eat).

Fairy Frog Mother is right about stress and the handling; it’s easy to overdo it with a new snake, but it does take them time to acclimate . . .

And it may just be heading into a shed period, which is no cause for panic just an indication to keep the humidity up...

I you recently got him that could be why he won’t eat. There are many reasons. Is your area cold as well as mine? That could do it. Getting ready for shedding can do it, or he just might not be all that hungry.

Also you said that he was being fed rat pups right? Was the previous owner feeding live, fresh killed, or frozen thawed? Knowing what kind of rat he was being fed could also be a big help. Some snakes just wont eat killed prey, only live. If this is the case DO NOT leave the live rat in with the snake for prolonged periods of time because they can do some serious damage to the snake.
