 Anybody know anything about flexwatt?

A nice snake shelf is my husband’s new pet project and I had some questions about flexwatt. He should be fine with the wiring because he has some electrician’s training, so don’t think I’m trying to burn the house down...
1. What width of flexwatt do you use for adult snakes? I was planning on ordering from beanfarm and it comes in 3", 4", and 11".
2. How many inches are inbetween each "cut line" on the tape? My biggest snake is long, but she curls up pretty small so 11"x12" seems like a lot.
3. Anybody use a dimmer switch or has anyone tried to use a human thermostat? They’re a lot cheaper than reptile ones. Right now we are leaning toward a dimmer switch.

Kels ...

I use dimmers that I build myself for as little as 12.00 ....but I prefer to add a receptacle to the 2 gang box and have both a dimmer circuit and a 120V power source. This now falls into the 15-18.00 dollar range...I like Romex clamp connectors and plastic 2 gang boxes ...well your husband will know what I am talking about. I made a video on you tube.

They are much better than the reptiles ones and yes, cheaper too.

Flex watt and other High end heat controls can be had here...I think these guys are one of the best sites out there...they have awesome heat mats ...cheap! IMO ....after I found these folks I became complacent and stopped looking, maybe you have better resources...let me know please.

Reptile basics

I use a human heat pad too ...it’s on 24/7 during the winter and I have it outside of the enclosure under the 2x2x4...the enclosure sits on 1x2’s laid flat, which gives it a 3/4" space underneath. The heat mat slips under just perfect. This paticular heat mat has a switch for 3 temp settings ...I have only used it on setting 1...and 2 at the most when I had the enclosure outdoors...I also have a moon glo heat light above. The heat mat alone will give me day time temps of 82-92 depending which setting I use and the ambient temps...I prefer a hot spot ...well a bit hotter than what the "norm" is ...if the snakes like it I let them have access to it. The enclosure is big enough to roam and have plenty of options.

If you would like to see the how to make a dimmer video I made just let me know ....your hubby will like it....LOL

Thank you!
We now have a successful dimmer-switch thermostat- we enthusiastically checked it on Christmas lights :)

Still wondering though: What size tape does everyone use on adult snakes? Is the 4" wide ok, or is the 11" necessary?

Oh, one more question: on the site you linked me to, one of the products is "heat tape connection" that comes free with insulator/clip sets. Is that just wire? there is no picture, so I’m cluless.

Kels....

It depends on the size of the enclosure...and the tubs / rack system you may be using. What size is the enclosure ...where are you putting it ...post a picture, that would help considerably.

Also here is a web site that I stumbled on that has more detailed pictures of each componet.
Bean Farm

For a corn snake and 1 enclosure I would seriously look at the UTH’s instead...Both sites have them.

BF UTH

Heat tape and all the componets are sold seperately....including a corded plug ...you have to assemble and terminate all circuits. Other than basic connections and terminations it’s quite simple ...call the company you choose to do business with and they will help you place the correct order. And the give you the best advice for your application ....they do this all day ...everyday.

Here is the shelf pre-construction:

Here it is after being assembled, waterproofed, and caulked with silicone (with an egg carton for scale)

There will be no tubs. It will just be furniture converted into a terrarium. We still need to buy pegboard for the back (the back that came with it was flimsy cardboard.) It will be painted (nontoxic), waterproofed, and will then provide ventilation. We are using cut plexiglass for the doors, which will swing down. We aready have 3 snakes to put in it and 2 UTHs. We had to place an order for flexwatt for the 3rd snake’s heating anyways and thought we’d order a little extra to replace UTHs on the others.

Here are a couple examples we were looking at.
DIY 1
DIY 2

The finished enclosures will be about 12"deepx28"longx8"high.
The snakes wouldn’t be sitting directly on the heat. It will be covered with plexiglass or something similar.
