 Will She Ever Grow?

Okay, I have a 2 yrs old female amelanistic corn snake, and she weighs 126 grams. Since about the beginning of Spring, she eats bare minimum, and I am worried she in just going to stay the same size. She’s only like 2 feet! What do you think..?

Length is not normally an issue when it comes to corn snakes-they range anywhere from 2-6 feet long. It’s the girth you want to worry about. If she’s underweight, then take her to a vet, she could have parasites. Before that, however, try a few things to get her to feed. For example, cut little snippets in the mouse’s skin to let a bit of blood show. If that doesn’t work, dip the mouse a few times in a can of tuna-this usually coats it with a smell. If that still doesn’t work, take her to a vet to be checked out. Could you post some recent pictures of her? I remember Annoxes, and she did look a bit small for her age. However, other factors could also be affecting her. Check the temperatures of her cage, including underneath the aspen in various spots of the cage. Check the actual cage-what size is it? If it’s bigger than a 20 gallon, it could be that she doesn’t feel secure enough. Simply place a number of hides in the enclosure and many fake plants to add a sense of security. Even with smaller cages she might not feel secure. If none of these work, then it’s probably a medical problem.

Her tank is 20gal long. Her cage is actually pretty hot, it get’s about 85 where she stays most of the time. I was thinking about giving her a 40gal, but if it’ll make her upset then I won’t. I just sort of think my leopard gecko is wasting her 40gal, by only using about 6 inches of it, lol.

I figured out a trick to getting her to eat! 5 Days ago she ate, and last night she ate. I just have to leave her in her feeding tank for about 30min with nothing in there but her and a mouse. She ate a young adult 4 days apart from her last meal, so I think I’m getting happy with this. I’ll try to get some pics of her...

I still don’t think the real question has been answered. Is she too old to grow any bigger? (2 Years).

A 40 gallon can suite her just fine as long as plenty of hides are provided. At 2 years old, you won’t see anymore significant growth, but snakes never stop growing. They just grow much slower as they age. Now, going back to the 40 gallon thing, I don’t think your leopard gecko is only using a small area; he’s probably roaming around at night, going everywhere. If you were to put a corn snake that is small for her age, like I said, it would be fine if you provide plenty of hides, but it still might intimidate her a bit. But the choice is yours.

If I gave her a 40gal, is it likely that she would ’grow into it’?

Not very likely. See, at 2 years old, she’s finished with most of her growing; they reach adult size at 18 months. Like I said, they’ll still grow, but we’re talking less than an inch a year. So with your snake, it’s not about the size of enclosure, but the age, and since yours is adult, no, she won’t grow into it. Can she get heavier and bulkier? Yes, of course, but be careful not to have her go overweight.

Arg! Why? Couldn’t she have eaten better as a baby? Lol.

Ok, I just weighed her in at 135 Grams, and about 29 inches. hard to measure a crazy snake! She’s about to shed soon... So your saying she’s a corn snake that’s going to stay this small? Oh, poor Ann.

That’s not true...maybe for a bearded dragon and some lizard species....but not snakes...

Our Beautiful Butter Corn snake is still growing at 3-4 years of age...I have a male amel that has grown much since the 5th year of age ...he is 8 now and much larger. I have kings and bull snakes that we rescued and have grown from 2-3 ft and exceed 60" after 3 years of care....I feed rats and rabbit pinks..and some mini rabbits with fur...my biggest corns will eat 3 rabbit pinks the size of a small rat.

Don’t get hung up on one answer from one person...
