What kind of horses do you have? Off to drill a hole in the new viv for the heater! Speak later, Jessica |

Anyway, Adam your female is stunning, I know you got her in Feb 04 but how old is she. Very nice. Have to admit, I would have said a reverse okeetee if you hadn’t told Jen already. Jen, your puppy is sooooo adorable. Not much else I can say that no one else already has. Jessica, I’ve been to 2 Falconry’s in Scotland, also one in England near Salisbury (can’t remember the exact name). I got some pics taken there, it was a fantastic day !!! Loved every minute of it... Got to hold some Birds of Prey as well (With the big annoying leather gloves lol). What was the one in Scotland you went to? C ya - Shaun |

The falconer lives in Kinlochewe in Wester Ross, near Loch Torridon. He and his wife own a bed and breakfast there, and when we went which was last November, all the birds were tied to perches on the front lawn - amazing! He had a golden eagle too, the first time I’d ever seen one, and a snowy owl, which was absolutely gorgeous. Birds of prey are a lot of work though - snakes are much easier! This European eagle owl was called Gudrun and she let me stroke her feathers. They were so soft! I’m a bit annoyed/upset because we just attached the heater to the wall of the new viv, but when we were trying to staple the heater sensor to the ceiling of the viv (the way we’ve done for the other two), the staple gun decided to stop working properly and pierced the sensor cord, and now the heater doesn’t work (well at least I don’t know if it worked before, but it certainly doesn’t now!). So we’ll have to buy a new one, AND a new staple gun. The expense never ends with snakes! Still, at least all our little friends are ok. That’s the main thing. I took Henri out of the tank in her lay box and put her in the sitting room while the drilling was being done, and she came out eventually (she probably got cold even though I had a fan heater on in there - bl**dy June and it’s still 14 degrees!), so I’ve removed and disinfected the lay box and filled it with damp wood chips as a humid hide because she’s going to shed soon. She had a drink too and we’ll feed her tonight. Adam, how long do you think we should feed fuzzies for? When should we build up to bigger prey? She’s so thin... Speak to you later, Jessica |

I can’t say I’ve been to the Falconer in Kinlochewe (He sounds very good and experienced), but I have been to Loch Torridon a few times with my cousins and Papa (Although my favourite is either "Loch Long" or "The Smiddy"). Beautiful place, very scenic. Sounds like a very good day out, might go one day. Sorry to hear about the staple gun incident. I would be very annoyed as well, presuming it happened to me. Take it you have bought a wooden viv (since you need to attach the heater to the wall of the enclosure, I had to do that before I got a glass one), I prefer wooden ones, not exactly sure why, just think they look better. What would make me even more annoyed/angry, is if the heater was brand new. As you said, the main thing is that everyone is alright, on that subject how is Henri and the eggs. JUNE, JUNE, JUNE !!!!!!!! No way. This was supposed to be a hot summer this year, according to predictors. One of the coldest in ages, I don’t think it could get much worse if it tried. - Speak to you soon - Shaun |

Yes, the viv is wooden. Luckily I have this week off work (apart from a one day course on Friday) so I’ll go and change the heater - but yes I was pretty annoyed! But it can’t be helped. Henri is fine thanks, becoming more herself if thin. She’s very opaque and lethargic but has just eaten two fuzzies again and I hope will be her old self after shedding. Gerald’s not getting his hands(?) on her again though - we don’t want another ten eggs this year! Jessica |

Lucky you !!! Nearly a whole week off. You could try hide the visible damage and see if the shop would replace or refund you, Hope they do. Glad Henri’s getting within herself again, Very glad she’s eating. I’ve heard of many snakes losing their appetite completely after becoming gravid all the way through even up to months after the birth. Feel sorry for Gerald, lol. Boys will be boys. LoL !!! Anyway, Speak to you soon - Shaun |

She looks almost like a sunglow to me, if the white patches were missing. Anyway she’s beautiful! The eggs are good thanks - at least I didn’t look at them yesterday apart from through the little plastic window, as I didn’t want to disturb the temperatures again. I’ll look at them later. And my female is eating ok. She’s never had a problem in that department - in fact I find in general corns as less fussy eaters than trinkets. Our trinket snakes eat well as a rule, but can be picky when they’re not in the mood for some reason, whereas Gerald and Henrietta have never refused a mouse, ever, since we got them! Shaun, yeah I thought about not saying what happened to the heater, but the holes are quite visible and we know the people in the reptile shop pretty well by this stage which puts me off lying! Maybe they’ll give me a discount on a new heater if I come out with it... or maybe not. Yeah, boys will be boys! I feel sorry for Gerald too. If there were any contraceptive injection I could give Henri so I could put them back together and let them enjoy themselves, I would! But I don’t think we need any more eggs in a couple of months - especially as, as it is, I don’t quite know how we’re going to organise looking after the ones we have when we go to the States for two weeks in September! One of my friends feeds them while we’re away, with her two daughters who are 13 and 10 and love the snakes, but this time by September we may have 17 snakes which is getting beyond a joke! Unless I’ve managed to ship any by then, but it depends how quickly they settle down. They should hatch late July, so we’ll see. Mind you I think sometimes mating is a bit one sided in snakes. I’m sure she enjoyed it originally, but not when she’s feeling weak and horrible, and there’s no reasoning with a male snake!! Jen, how is Nikita today, and the eggs! Jessica |

eggs are good, they all still look great...the icubator seems to be working great, keeping them at a temp of 84 degrees..the humidity is good, 95%, and they are all still big and white...how long til i know for sure they are going to be ok? as for poor nikita, i can’t get her to eat anything...i even tried pinkies, with the brains leaking out...she’s just not into it...she hardly can lift her head...i keep trying every day...she seems like she wants to, she tastes it with her tongue, and rubs her nose on it, but just won’t open her mouth...maybe her insides just aren’t ready yet...i know sometimes they just need to wait, but i’m not going to let her wait too long before i take her in to the vet....still no more sign of an ri, which is very good, but not eating will kill her too, so hopefully she works up an appetite very soon... thanks for being around, you guys, like i’ve said beofre, you all keep me sane!! jen ps-my horse is morgan-quarter cross, his name is bronx, and he’s still a stallion, but he’s so calm you would never know...he’s beautiful...very handsome boy!! |

Your horse sounds lovely! It must be great living in the country with all those animals... Glad to hear the eggs are ok. I think in a week you should have some idea if they are ok. You could candle them after a week - I’ve decided not to with mine, because they look white and I don’t want to disturb them. If they’re going to die I think they will do so pretty quickly, will change colour in a matter of a few days I would say - although I’m no expert of course! What kind of incubator do you have? I’m interested you have it at 95% humidity - mine is a bit lower because higher than that there was so much condensation. Do you get much condensation? I’m sorry about poor Nikita - it breaks my heart hearing about her rubbing her nose on the mouse. I don’t have any experience of this so I would be fairly quick to agree with you on the vet side of things. It’s probably that she’s worn out - it took her so long to lay them - but it’s probably best to get her checked soon in case. Was she a good eater before she became gravid? I think some snakes do go off eating after they lay. Speak to you later, Jessica |

I am very inexperienced on this topic, but I would say yes. In my opinion, she has been through a lot lately, and I think she needs the food to regain her strength and confidence. After laying all of those eggs, she must be on the bare foundations, you need to build her up again (excuse the phrase, couldn’t think of a suitable word, lol) Anyway, Just read the posts up until now, and yep, shame you can’t get contraceptives for snakes or give them the pill, lol. Anyway, how are the eggs doing? Speak to you soon. - Shaun |

Also feel I should have put vermiculite AND perlite in the incubator, as Jen and Adam did, and it’s too late now unless I move them again, which I don’t really want to. Another thing I never read. The books I’ve read seem to say any substrate - moss, vermiculite, perlite is ok - not a mixture. Aarggghh... well yes the eggs look ok thanks! Cooking you a beautiful little hatchling. Glad you’ve got a day off. Yes, pills for snakes, great idea, or even better, injection lasting 12 weeks like for humans! But it’s not to be. Speak later and thanks for cheering me up, Jessica |

I finf that it is hard to beleive that the vet trip was canceled by laying too. That is lucky. As for the substrate, again I am unhelpful and useless on the whole ’breeding’ topic, but I would not thinl it matters much if you have read that vermiculite is acceptable and not a mixure. Remember, in the wild, corns lay in very poor conditions without all the monitoring, spraying, etc etc. 9 out of 10 of these corns are healthy and live a long life. Not sure if that helps, but anyway... Speak tomorrow - Shaun |
