Did your eggs cave in in the last few days as the book says they do? Mine haven’t caved in yet and are at day 51 today. I’m impatient to meet my new little friends!

I know, I’ll be ecstatic! Baby snakes are just so cute I want to eat them! (not literally, I’m just strange...), but I’ve never seen one that’s just hatched, it’s got to be the most amazing thing. To think you bred the two adults and created a little creature that would never have existed otherwise... it’s mind blowing really! I’m worried my eggs look too small to have a baby snake inside... but then I guess they are very tightly coiled. The eggs are probably an inch and a half long and plumper now than they were at first...

Keep us posted with more pipping, sheds, feeding etc!

Dont worry its not to small i didnt see him just hatch I saw him come out. I bet mine just exploded the egg wityout a egg touth because he must have been so cramped. They probally just exploded out. THe others still havent pipped yet. Here are some snapshots

I guarentee you will never find a cuter snake he is a bit small thou a rough measure brought him in at 9 in Also don throw away your eggs. Let them dry then take water and rehydrate them. THen towel off the excess water take a foam can and stick the hose inside put a little foam into each one tnh once expanded to prehatch wipe off excess foam Then write on them the species morph and date then use a clear coat to seal the outside. JUst a cool little thing from reptiles magazine.

Great stuff! I agree, the babies are adorable! Its so hard to eventually sell them! Jess, my eggs dented in a tiny tiny bit before they hatched. Like one or two little dents. I just woke up one morning before school to see a head poking out LOL! From there on, all mine pipped and hatched in pairs of two. I know how excited you both must be! Reptilove, once again, congratulation and hopefully once theyre all out we can see some pics of them all!

 I saw a head!!!

Reptilover, cute little snake! I didn’t quite understand your message about the foam can. Don’t know if it was me you meant not to throw away the eggs - don’t worry I have no intention of doing that after seven weeks’ incubation and still looking good! They’re not small small - just it’s weird they can contain a baby snake! But you could be right they might be a little overhydrated - they’re pretty firm, though the humidity is constant at 80%. Here’s a picture on the day they were laid:

And today, 51 days since they were laid:

Adam, good to see you! We had a good time in the New Forest - but no adders! No doubt they were all there laughing at us in the bushes. It was a very hot day for here, maybe 90 degrees or more. Perhaps too hot for a northern European adder! I do have news though in that I think my female is gravid again. I’ve been in denial about this because I don’t need any more eggs or baby snakes, cute as they are! - plus we’re away for two weeks in September. But she shed two days ago and is spending all her time hiding again - normally she would be very active just after shedding; she’s quite jumpy again and looks big in the rear one third. I could be wrong, but I have the lay box back in the tank! I hope she will be ok as she lost quite a bit of weight after the last clutch, but she’s eaten well since and seems a fit healthy snake. I wish I’d let her mate again if she is though, because now I’ll probably get slugs, and that will be a waste of her energy reserves... oh well!

Anyway, Reptilover sorry i didn’t mean to hijack your thread, and please keep us posted on developments!

Jessica

I dont care hijak away i meant dont throw the eggs away after they hatch you put the foam in the egg and when it dries you have a preserved egg. Should i start making little holes in the eggs to help them out cuz its been 24 hours and ive only seen 2 snakes or should i wait a while longer

I would never slit the eggs no matter what because if they are not ready to hatch, then they are now dead, so its up to you I guess. PM either BayouBeasts or SCSnakeman. They would be a better reference for this type of question.

 I saw a head!!!

Congrats on the new babies! Don’t slit the eggs. I had 3 on day 1, 9 on day 2, & 1 on day 3. I’ve read where it can take up to 48 hours for all to pip & I would guess it could even be longer. Cutting the eggs can injure the snake, especially if it needs a couple more days to develope. My last one was the smallest egg, so I was a little worried the embryo had died, but I waited & a baby snake not any smaller than its siblings finally came out! All my snakes took 12-24 hours to come out of their shells.

See I knew they’d hatch fine! You can also drape a damp paper towel over the eggs now if you’d life. This has been known to soften the shells a little bit. I wouldnt handle them until after the first shed and you know for sure they are eating. Because obviously if one isnt eating, you dont want to apply the extra stress of being handled! You will notice though once they are in their containers, they drink and pee ALOT! So be ready to be cleaning up. Good luck and have fun...
