 New Snake, Climbing

I just got my first snake, a 2ft orange and white corn. He’s lovely but it’s in a 5ft glass aquarium. The light is a normal tube, but he seems to live on the light. If you’ve ever seen a big fish tank it has 3 glass braces along the top, the snake climbs up and wraps arround the light and sleeps there. Im affraid to turn the light on as it get hot, like I can’t touch it hot. Should I just turn it on when he down and figure that he won’t go near it coz it’s to hot, or leave it off all the time? If i do this he will get very little light. There is not really much I can do for stopping him going up there. I could try build a gaurd but thats not likely I’d have to drill meatal etc...So should I just turn it on? Or leave it off?
Thanks and Hi!

my garter climbs on top of its UVB/A light bulb tube thingy all the time and sits there for a wile but it doesnt get hot atal! but no corns wont know the difference it will probably just stay on the bulb and get severe burns depending on how hot the bulb gets cant u take the light out leave it on for say 12 hours and see how hot it is if its not hot then you can keep it in the tank without a worry.

They dont need UVA/Uvb at all so there is no need to have them in the cage except for showing your snakes off. You could add some branches to your snakes enclosure since he obviously likes to climb.

I don’t even reccomend any type of light or heat lamp at all.It saves a lot of money if you just buy a reptile heat mat and cover half the viv with it.And then use a thermostat to control the termperature.

I agree about the UV but I like to use a heat lamp. I use an infared bulb and saves mony. I like how there’s no way that your snake can get burned.

I have UV with my garter because i was feeding it fish for a little while and it was young when it was born and yes it does help with growth of bones especially as it was on a diet of fish anyway that doesnt matter what i was saying is that they dont get hot so if he wanted a bulb that didnt get hot get one of them...?

It’s UV not UBV. Is that any better or worse?

a 40 watt reptisun has UVA. UVA reptisun bulbs are just normal incadescent bulbs, the ones you can find for a buck at a hardware store. It doesnt harm the snake, but it is not beneficial to corn snakes. Corn snakes need heat coming from below them to help them digest prey, so an UTH is better. I use a low wattage bulb for my cage as well just so the snake will have a natural day/night cycle, the snake is kept warm from the UTH.
