UTH Problem Well, after spending an arm and a leg on my viv, my UTH cracked the bottom glass. Ugh!
Before I even installed the UTH, I read the instructions that said to keep all water from the area of and surrounding the UTH, as the heat combined with rapid cold could crack the glass.
Following the instructions, I placed the UTH in the very far corner, away from any water. Despite this, yesterday, while cleaning out the viv, I discovered a large crack in the bottom front corner of my viv. The break was clean through. The only thing holding the glass in place is the caulking and the UTH itself (since it sticks so well).
Let me reiterate..... UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

UTH Problem so the uth is an under tank heater? I use heat lamps. sorry to hear you have had a problem with this but it could be help full to others who read this and are on the fence about using a uth or heat lamp. you can buy clear silicone to seal the crack so that it wont hurt you snake

UTH Problem Yeah, I am heading to get some today. My whole purpose for getting the UTH was because the guys at Great Valley Serpentarium said it was the best for corns.
Best for corns does not necessarily mean the best for your viv I suppose.

UTH Problem well I guess it all depends on the owner and what they are comfortable with I don’t want to use a uth because my corn like to go under his reptile carpet and I don’t want it to cause a burn so i just use a heat lamp with a basking plat form so far its working out quit well. hope you can get this fixed do you think the temp was to hot don’t them have a temp gage on them?

UTH Problem Thats odd. I have an UTH in my bubblegum snows 10 gallon, and its under her water bowl. I have spilled water on it many a time (and changed wet paper towels many a time, ugh) and nothing has ever happened. Maybe the bottom of your tank was faulty to begin with?
Hope you manage to fix it alright.

UTH Problem UTHs can get very hot and should only be used with a thermostat or other temp control device (rheostat). I don’t think your tank would have cracked if you had been using A temp control device. A UTH plugged into the wall without a thermostat can reach temps above 120 degrees F. To hot for any snake!!!

UTH Problem Yeah, I knew the heat was too hot, so I took care of that by adding an insulating layer on the bottom of the tank, underneath the substrate. This allows the tank to heat, without the risk of deep frying my snake.

UTH Problem
Th at happened to me 1ce, just as i got the tank new aswell, the UTH insruction manual said to put a thinish layer of polystyrene under the tank, then the UTH under that. So i did, and no more cracks appeared! It works so well because polystyrene is a good insulator, so, while its not making the glass so hot that it will break, it still keeps the viv at a good temp, so no need to switchh to heat lamps. Use what you prefer, but the polystyrene really works well anyway.
